I can't be the only one who has noticed a significant uptick in threads that have been started with only a link to an article or a YouTube video. Most threads have no original thoughts, discussion starters, or talking points. At most, they typically restate the article or link title.
The links and videos are often sponsored or promoted content from social media (like the sponsored crap that shows up in your Facebook feed) or a 3 month old YouTube channel with a dozen videos and clickbait text on every thumbnail. Frankly, I think that's where a lot of this is originating from: Other social media sites.
OP (who will often post a few at the same time) sees something interesting in their social feed, has no idea it's sponsored clickbait (or what sponsored content even is), thinks it's neat, and cross-posts to BITOG. It's internet junk food.
There is a forum on BITOG called Interesting Articles but it's a graveyard with only a dozen active threads for the entire year. Most of these type of threads end up in Automotive General, Vehicles, or Off Topic.
There are lots of good articles that are shared too, from actual automotive journals and news sites, and they're posted with context, questions, and discussions. That's good BITOG content.
It's kind of tiring to see constantly see "Top 10 Toyota's from the 1970s" and "Here's why car dealers can't sell brown cars" in the Latest Threads column every morning.
