Thoughts on using the "Car Handle" as entry/exit support?

Hi everyone, my 90-year-old father needs all the help he can get getting in and out of my parents' 2018 Tucson. Right now he clamors for a grip on the a-pillar to get in and out. I'm not sure if this would actually be any help to him, but what I'd like to know is your opinion on whether the striker can really withstand this kind of leverage.

Is this just asking for a pulled out or broken-off striker, or am I my underestimating the strength?

In the early 90s GM cars had seat belts attached to the doors that attached to the car with said strikers. They're the most solid thing there.

I don't know but please let us know what you find. My FIL is almost 80 and has a harder time all the time with getting out of his Renegade also. My 88yo mom thankfully is still pretty mobile and gets up and out easier.

I cringe at things like that like you are thinking. My FIL also destroys everything and leans HARD on things. Everything breaks and bends when he gets to it.

Concerned that he could misconnect it , leading to a fall.

Door jams are very strong -designed to handle severe side impacts w/o the doors opening up. The door latch and striker work together for safety. The only thing I would do is torque the bolts down and be sure they are tight. If not the striker can move bit and cause the door fit and open/close efforts to suffer. When bolts are loose you have HUGE amounts of play for door adjustments so be sure they are tight. I have a customer, middle age lady that goes close to 450-500lbs and has ripped the A pillar assist handle out - this striker idea would be a good thing for her.

I am sure its strong enough, but I might be afraid of it slipping out.

My little truck and Xterra has grab handles near all 4 doors. I have zero mobility issues but still use them. Our Rav4 has nothing, and its really quite annoying.

No comment about the striker strength, but thanks for the post, did not know of this item.

Spend some time critiquing the many videos of these. Some have the metal insert part not shaped well and it seems that they would move back/forth a lot, maybe causing a mis-step or fall. The seat belt cutter ones show bad performance.

This seems like a poor design. Small fit and rounded side that is against the striker plate.

I like this "composite" rubber covered one. Tight fit and very flat, large, wedge engagement surface: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HTB8FaK3oEA&psig=AOvVaw0tz74GwV13N4OyOTc9fi2w&ust=1725322346978000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCJi4u_L8oogDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE

I was thinking about ordering this one, but your suggestion does look better. Thanks for the post.

If you have trouble with him sliding on the seat, get one of these. I bought one for my grandpa and it made it so much easier. It's shaped in a loop, so sliding makes it so easy. Amazon link below.

That support handle jammed into the striker should be strong enough to support an adult; I would worry about the loosening of the mounting bolts from the cyclic loading and unloading. It should be fine as long as you check the mounting bolt tightness periodically.

The door flexes on the striker when the unibody twists just going down the road.
