Thoughts on Stihl 4-Mix engines.

I recently bought a Stihl HT-131 Pole Saw, Other than the heft I love the saw.

The first time I used it, I noticed it didn't sound like any 2-stroke engine I've heard. Pulled the shroud....Valve Cover.
NO where on any sales brochure's was this listed as a 4-stroke, Nor was it listed as a 2-stroke.

Anybody have experience with the 4-Mix engines?

I have had a refurb MTD/Ryobi 4 stroke trimmer with attachments (leaf vacuum/shredder,Air blower,pole saw) for years now.Works great.The lack of blue smoke,and reduced engine noise makes it worth all of the $89.95 I paid all those years ago (plus attachments).

It is a four stroke that uses oil mixed in the gas instead of oil in the crank case. You can run it any direction. It is quieter and has good power at a lower rpm compared to two stroke.

They have been out for a several years and little problems with them now. They did have some issues at the beginning with carbon and some other things but have fixed it now. The ultra oil they sell fixed some of the issues and it extends the warranty when you buy it with the unit.

Thanks, I bought 6 quarts of MotoMix to get the 4 year warranty. Definitely noticed the low-end torque.

I've owned a KM-90R for a few years. Takes a bit getting used to the power vs sound. Great low end power. I love that I do not have to keep it screaming to cut. I'm not even sure if it revs above 10k where 2 stroke are 13k or so. Definitely use the Stihl oil for the mixed fuel to stay ahead of the possible carbon buildup. There is a schedule (or there used to be when the 4mix was new tech) to check/tighten the valves, 65 hrs or something like that. Other than that, same as 2 stroke.
