No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!!!!
Don't do it. K&N cheapened up a few years ago. Not a great product. Adequate, acceptable, but not great.

In order of how good they are (performance)

1. Fram Ultra
2. Royal Purp tied with Amsoil EA
3. Fram ToughGaurd tied with M1 Ext Performance tied with Bosch Premium
4. Wix tied with Napa Gold
5. Any other paper filters.

A little pricey but a good filter. I love the wrench-off feature. Many here are upset that they moved production outside the U.S. I prefer NapaGold (Wix)and Fram. But if K&N is brand you hold dear, go for it.

Instead of following the K&N approach to higher air flow as suggested in their advertising you can just keep the treated paper filter and press now a bit more on the gas pedal. If you've ever merged on to a freeway you already know it works.

Hope he doesn't get air in his oil filter!

Engine Oil filter discussion

No. They are cheapo Mexican [censored] now.

K&N oil filters used to be just like M1. But, unfortunately, they decided to cheapen the product and outsource to Mexico and Korea but without passing on the savings.

A batter suggestion for something like the old US-made K&N's would be Carquest Blue or M1.

I used one for my first change and found there was a trace of oil apparently leaking out of the juncture between the nut and the body of the filter...sound online that others have had far more substantial leakage from that area. The nut turned out to be mostly useless for me because my filter sits right on top of the engine and hand loosen/tighten works great for me. I also found that the K&N filter does not meet Subaru's spec for bypass pressure, but am honestly not too worried about that now that I understand the spec better.
I have one left in the garage, will use it at some point and keep on eye on that nut leakage carefully...prefer the Subaru OEM filters at this point.

Why would they?

They will work great and the engine will last longer than you will have the car. If you want to use them than do it.

They used to be a quality Champion Labs made filter, very similar in construction to the Mobil 1 filter.

They've since been offshored are now no longer of that quality. I would avoid them.

K&N are adequate oil filters. Nothing special, kind of the usual paper cellulose bottom of the line filtering media you'd find in any cheap oil filter where they are cutting costs of making it. I've read where many people think paper is OK to use, and if that's true, you can pick any oil filter on sale anywhere and be fine.
If you want more performance, like getting out smaller particles, then you can do much better than K&N.

Gotta love HP claims from them. Any increase is always up near redline as in "5HP @ 6000RPM".

I forget who posted it, but they said MicroGuard at O'Reilly Autoparts is the best cheap oil filter. I tend to agree, since its a Wix-managed cheapo oil filter, not bad for the price.
Wait it was:

Microguard filter and Supertech oil.
