K&N HP-2009 used oil filter cut open - torn pleat

This came off my daughters 2005 Jeep Liberty with 3.7L engine. 5K miles on second run of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30. 205K miles on the vehicle. Fair amount of carbon so looks like the Valvoline Restore and Protect is doing it's job. Not real clear in the pics but there are torn pleats on both sides which kind of surprised me. I'm not a fan of louvers but looks like they were open enough to not cause issues. Another K&N and Valvoline Restore and Protect went back in it. I like the K&N for this application as the filter location sucks and the nut makes life easier getting it off.

Absolutely another amazing performance for Valvoline Restore and Protect!
Has this engine been using oil between changes?
I mean, @ 205,000 I'd expect so, but would like to know if there is any improvement.

Typically this engine uses a little more than a quart every 1k Miles. So far I have not noticed any real improvement, but this was only the second run.

I figure on doing 4 OCIs with Valvoline Restore and Protect then re-evaluate.
 
Its unfortunate for sure but rest assured the vast majority of the oil still went through the intact media. I guess only 3-4% might have travelled through the tear. Then then next time around almost all of that 3-4% went through the intact media.

It would be way more than 3-4% going through those tears. Calculations on the leaky ruffled leaf springs with a pretty good air gap on each side showed to be 10-15% leakage.
 
This makes me reluctant to use any of the HP-2008 filters that K&N customer service sent me after I returned a black K&N filter with defective threads. Is it really that difficult to make a quality filter? Bad threads, wavy pleats and torn media? I'm glad Premium Guard bought First Brands.
 
Filter medium looks thin and weak. Probably around 0.40-0.45 mm. When I calculated the leakage through a 25 sq. mm hole I got some terrible numbers around 40-50% at the delta p = 1.1 bar. In your case, the shape and the size of the holes is unknown. Just guessing that the leakage was 5-20% depending on the RPM. Good part of that carbon buildup in the filter went through the engine.

Found one like that on #1 Girl's 328i long ago and stopped using K&N.
When K&N motorcycle filters were originally made by HiFlo they were very good. Then they moved them to the US at the mediocre plant. I stayed with Thailand made HiFlo like many others did.
The nut on the HiFlo ones used to have holes so you could safety wire them on the bike. Not in the last 12 or so years that I've seen.

Yeah, in theory seems like a win. Otoh, what it will actually translate to for the US made Fram and Champ Labs filter brands remains to be seen.

For topic filter, as noted, the oft seen wide pleat spacing failure. 'To me', similar to Champ Labs bypass seal area leaks pointless to attempt to extrapolate size/amount of oil bypass. The difference between the two is seal area bypass starts at installation.

Calculations? Well anyway, even if it was 10-15%, or even 20%, the oil 80-90% goes through the intact media, and if 10-20% slips through the tear on one pass, its highly likely to go through the intact media on the subsequent passes. Over and over again.

Again, not excusing it, and I don't like it, but its not catastrophic by any means.

It's all in this thread link below. Read from the start if you want the whole background. Fluid flow through small openings is very hard to estimate by just looking at it, so the calculations need to be done.

Engines produce debris constantly, so thinking that if something makes it through once that it will be caught later doesn't cover the whole story. An oil filter with some big tears or other internal leakage isn't going to keep the oil as clean as a filter with zero internal leakage. Yeah, I'm not going to use any oil filters that show a history of tearing media or having a ruffled up leaking leaf spring. Plus filters that tear media also have the risk of some media breaking off and going into the engine. Lots of people jump ship on those filters and find something better to put on their engine.
