Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

I posted this in another thread but I’ll add it here too. My son recently hit 400,000 km in his 2002 WRX! Still on the original engine, turbo and transmission too. One head gasket around 220,000 km (he bought it 8 years ago at 236,000 km) At first he was using Brotella but I convinced him to switch to Castrol 5w-40 and that’s what he mostly uses but once in a while he’ll grab Pennzoil 5w-40. He is pulling the engine over the winter and has big plans for it, looking to make 400 horsepower, he is even considering dropping an Evo engine in it just to be different 😃View attachment 310258View attachment 310259
Not lacking that Evo to be different 😷

What has dealer said about the issue? I’d drive it hard enough to either set a CEL or blow it up while it’s under warranty…
Dealer said they hear it, and I just need to run higher octane fuel. They say the oil issue is normal.

I’m just going to go ahead and sell it to carvana. I’d rather not deal with my only dealer in the state anymore and would rather just get another gmt-400 or a gmt800 pickup and forget I even owned this car.

Well, again, sorry to hear that. Can be tough when there’s no support network and you’re unfamiliar with the overall vehicle. It may not be this bad if you weren’t on an island, but I get it. Repeat problems can put a bad taste in your mouth. Best of luck, and let us know the last 8 of the VIN so we don’t accidentally buy it! 😂

I’m glad you guys have had good luck with your Subarus. Mine is a pre-detonating pile of bolts.

2023 crosstrek 6mt
Pings, has already needed a blower motor, burns 1qt every 5,000 miles, needs a passenger side front cv axle, the air conditioning sucks, and gas mileage has steadily declined in the past 3 months or so. I’m only at 58,000 miles.

This thing will be carvana’s problem soon.
Yeah I really don't get the Subaru love. I know some people have good experiences. There's a guy on social media who plays a game to try to find a street in Seattle WITHOUT a Subaru on Google Street View. Not possible. They all have one. But my friends have had bad luck with them. All the issues you describe. Suspension issues. Head gaskets. They all have oil jugs in the back permanently. I'll stick with Toyota.

My son has had great luck with his Subaru, the parts are cheap and readily available and he has fun working on the car and definitely loves driving it. He’s also had a couple of older Foresters as winter beaters and they didn’t cost much to keep running.

Subarus are very popular in areas that get a lot of deep snow because they have a really good all wheel drive system

You have definitely unlocked the Subaru longevity algorithm, Glenda. Not everyone is as lucky. And fortunately for you, you can fix probably nearly anything that would go wrong with it too.

@Patman yes I've lived in the Midwest where the Subaru is the official state car. :sneaky:

Honestly they’ve pretty hands off to 200k.

Same. I never understood all the Ford & GM bashing when every Subaru owner I knew back on the Central Coast had continuous problems with turbos, head gaskets, etc.

I do take that back as there was a gal on my street who kept rocking an old fwd Subaru that just kept on chugging.

Ford Super Duty(minus select diesel units) & most Toyotas I’ve been around seem to last with just good maintenance.

420,000 miles

477,800 is the magic number

Wow. What car? What is your oil change history?

You also have an amazing opportunity for a 420,069 odometer pic. I’d probably stop wherever I was and have it towed back home to keep forever.

I'm posting this in this section instead of the General section because it definitely has a lot to do with lubrication.

I just wanted to see how many people here have over 150,000 miles on their original engines, to see what kind of oil you've been using and what kind of intervals.

We talk about a lot of different oils on here, and critique a lot of used oil analysis, but the absolute best way to find out if any particular routine works, is to look at those people who have had success with it by getting long life from their engine! That is truly what we are all trying to achieve here.

So if you've owned your car since new (or at least know the exact prior history of it from new), please step in and give us your input!

I think this could be a very interesting topic!
