It would be great if you guys could write if you are using 0w30,5w30 or 10w30 oils, and write what car is it,and how much mileage and oil consumption is. (Since my mechanic told me that 10w30 dino oil is too thin for lubricate my firebird engine, and that it will be destroyed,I became afraid),So if you guys could show me that there is other people who use 30 weights dino, blend or fully synthetic oils,And have no problems with it, and it isnt destroyed your engine because of a use of a 30 weight oils,I can continue use 10w30 with better peace of mind. Thanks. I can start first; my car is pontiac firebird 92 v6 3.1 112500 miles on it,and oil consumption is about half quart/2500 miles.oil is 10w30 gm goodwrench.

Well, two... 96 s-10 4.3 with over 200,000 using 10w-30, and a 80 caprice, 267 v8, its tripped I don't know how many times, using 10w-30 like always stated in the manual. the 96 is around a quart and doesn't leak, the 80 leaks a little and burns a little from valve stem seals at startup ( no visible smoke there after ) and uses maybe 2 to 2.5 quarts using pennz high mileage.. and has pretty much been the same using other oils. And 3,000 mile oil changes since they get driven very little now....theres nothing to worry about using 10w-30, he's just blowing smoke....

10w30 Full Syn (no pref) right now it has Q Full Syn 2000 Ford Rnager Flex Fuel 45000 miles
5w30 2004 Mazda MPV 3.0L 13000 miles Full Syn (Mobil 1)

Both are on a 6month/6000miles OCI with no oil consumption. I want to try dino at the same intervals but are worried about that it might be too long and might be a slow death to my cars.

Perhaps you can find a North American Firebird owners manual and see if it recommends a 30 weight oil (or maybe get someone that has one to scan that page for you). If so, that should be good enough proof to your mechanic that it's safe to use.

For what it's worth, I've been using 5W30 in my car since I got it... but it's a Geo Metro, aka 2-door lawnmower. Not quite a Firebird.

Been using 0W-30 (synthetic), 5W-30 (conventional & semi-syntetic) & 10W-30 (semi-synthetic) oils in my '05 Subaru WRX STi since new (I have 16,000 miles on it now). Only noted consumption was approx. 1/2 quart over a 5,800 mile OCI. (My longest prior interval was 2,500 miles).

I predict this thread will be huge, as probably 90% of the modern cars on the road today in the U.S. spec a xW-30 oil for normal service.

GM spec'd the 3.1 for 5-30 and has made millions of them. The only posts about that motor here are complaints about coolant leaks in the manifold not problems with using GM spec 5-30 or 10-30 in it. Although I use 5-30 in two cars and 10-30 in another (two being GM V6) this thread is so unnecessary. It is the second post of the same question by the same poster. I'm starting to doubt if tonttu cares what we say and only wants posts.

1996 Audi S6 2.2 TQ - 103,000 miles. Spec: 0W-30 to 15W-50. Used before: Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40, M1 5W-40, M1 0W-40, Castrol RS 0W-40, Statoil 5W-40. Now using Castrol SLX longtec 0W-30. Always used synthetic oil in this car. Oil consumption is 0.5 to 0.8 liter pr. 5,000 miles.

2005 Opel Astra 1.8 Ecotec - 5,000 miles. Spec: 0W-30 to 5W-40. Using Opel full synthetic 5W-30. No noticeable oil consumption.

S6 gets OC every 5,000 miles (turbo) or every 6th month. Astra every 10,000 miles or every 6th month.

04 Grand Am 3.4L V6, ran factory 5-30 for the first 4K, then switched to M1 5-30 for 5K (hated it, made my engine noisy as h*ll). Now running GC 0-30 for the past 2 OCI's, approx 7K each. I just checked the dipstick, about 6K on the OCI so far, and ZERO consumption. BTW, the thicker GC made my engine quite down a great deal. Slight MPG hit though

Other car is 04 Explorer 4.0 V6. Ran factory 5-30 for about 3K, then M1 5-30 for about 5K, now running TropArtic 10-30 blend (changing oil this week, OCI will be roughly 5K). Gonna run another 5K on the TA again. Engine runs smooth and quiet with it in there.

Your mechanic knows about as much as the Iffy Lube guys. Run 10-30 in there, it will be fine.

The LS1 Firebirds run just fine on 5W-30, the LT1 and L88s and earlier engines prefer 10W-40.

I've run nothing but 30 weight oils in the Grand Prix and the Envoy. It's aleays been Amsoil, Amsoil S2k, Mobil 1, GC, or Royal Purple. I've gotten great results in oil analysis and my 109,000 mile 3.8L GP engine is clean as a whistle on the inside.

I think it's time to find yourself a new mechanic.

This thread sounds like a clever rehash of the endless xW-20 wars, but with different frosting. Instead of xW-20 users marching in the solidarity of those who've seen the light defending their choice, higher viscosity users are being conned into circling the wagons justifying theirs. I don't need to justify my choice; so, include me out...

You have one car - the 1991 v6 camaro and
have started 10 or more threads on
"can I use 30w dino?" in it. ?????????????

0w30 Esso XD3 Synthetic
1995 Chevy Blazer 4.3L
0 consumption over 6000miles
140,000miles

My engine is your engine with two cylinders cut off. It is essentially the same block.

Tonttu,

Your mechanic is an idiot, don't go back to him, he doesn't know squat about oil. Since when is 10w30 a bad oil for a 350? Show him the owners manual and have the moron explain why he knows better than GM.

This is a 3.1 v6

Whoops, wow, then for sure 10w30 would be more than adequate for any 3.1L.

Again, the mechanic needs to get his head out of the 50s.

I run Mobil 1 5W-30 in a 03 Saturn L200 with the 2.2 eco-tec motor, uses no oil between changes using the oil-life monitor averages between 7K-7.5K. I drive a thousand miles a week and average 29-30mpg, and my UOA are excellent. In my wife's car a 00 Saturn L200 with the same motor I run Valvoline Dura Blend a semi-synthetic, at 4K changes, all in town miles, and the engine rans better than new and uses no oil. I stick w/ 5W-30 because the people who designed and built the engine recomend it. Hope this helps.

tonttu,

You never did say what that mechanic actually recommended for a viscosity.... I'm just curious.

The 3.1 is speced for 5W-30; or 10W-30 for severe driving conditions. Your mechanic must spend a lot of time around BMW's or something.

I have a japanese built mazda V6 and i use 5w30 and 10w30. No oil usage, and slightly better mileage around town with 5w30.

Your GM car using 1/2 qt every 2000-3000 miles is nothing to worry about. 10w30 should do just fine for you i would think.
