An acquaintance through a Facebook group for our cars was in the area today and brought his '82 300D by. California car, just over 300K, 5 cyl. turbo/auto with tan interior.

D you know "rollguy" on the Benz forums? Friend of mine. He sells the ac kits to put a sanden ac compressor on those.

My uncle had one that was not maintained well but he drove it for the classy look.

My cousin would complain about getting headaches while riding in it!

Me too, that coupe is sweet! I always loved that era Mecerdes' taillights.

Those things last forever! No complex computers, catalysts, DEF, etc. You can run them on anything from jet fuel, to waste oil, to vegetable oil.

Whats the advantage of a sanden compressor?

They did.

We had on of these (actually a 240D) that my step mother filled up with unleaded and drove about 30 or 40 miles... after that it had an even more pronounced knock and then blew up 40 or 50,000 miles later. Dad put a 350 target motor in it (for about 20% of what a reman diesel cost) and used to like to take it to the local MB independent, ask for an oil change and walk around the side and watch when they raised the hood... it was usually good for a laugh...

Heh, yes, they seem to be most prone to running rich in low/mid RPM's before the turbo gets going. Unlike most diesels they cruise at 2,700+ RPM (the 4 cyl. 240D's can get up close to 4 grand at freeway speeds) so the turbo doesn't really start boosting until after 2K. The IDI diesel supposedly doesn't burn as clean, either. And the apparatus used to alter fuel mixture relative to boost on the Bosch inline injection pump can "work" a long time after it's right.

Just FYI, in mine (the white one)I've been repeating 23-24 MPG in town lately, best ever was 28. He drove his sedan 280 miles yesterday and got 21.8 which is kinda low, but it was loping pretty hard when he started it up and he had 2 passengers.

But, as somebody else said, gotta love a good old mechanical injection, emissions-free, inline diesel. It'll keep chugging until you deprive it of air, fuel, or oil.

White one.

Yep, the white coupe. It's actually the very first turbocharged 300CD made - the diesel coupes were a US-only model to begin with, and were NA until August of '81 when mine was built. Serial number is '00001.

I got it last October and have the mechanical to-do list down to just a few things. Haven't done much cosmetic yet but the PO to fair care of it for being a non-car guy's DD for 5 years.

No, don't know him, but the handle rings a bell and I've heard plenty about the Sanden conversions.

Yep, it was the 300TD is the US. The rarest of the body configurations, and at the top of the collectability heap now. But they are nice rigs - I did some work on one a few months ago and it's almost a different car from my coupe!

LOL! I bet the small block gave it a bit more pep, to boot. The diesel is a fine powerppant but getting into the boost is essential to have real acceleration past 2nd gear.
