Always keep some TUBE type HF radio gear around.

I do I do. A Viking 1 and an HT-37.

Now, if only I could find a Tube inverter.

Yes, as has 60. Got a set of 60 meter crystals for the S Line. Now I can join the military radio collector nets, like the "Moose and Squirrel" net on 5375.5 upper Saturdays at noon, though my S Line, I think, was initially purchased by an international airline. (Boatanchors forever! - though they take up a lot of room)

My S-Line went in service in October, 1965, as the civil defense radio set at a local hospital.

Mine must have run for a long time without attention, when I got it there was a half inch of dust inside, and it was crystaled for "elsewhere".

I'm more concerned about the power grid than the communication infrastructure. Most of our stuff are transferred through fiber these days except the last mile. Power going out on the other hand, we've seen how someone in Arizona frying the grid causing San Diego to black out.

HAHAHA! My kids liked that they got out of school early. That was actually a good thing that happened if you lived near the coast so you did not have the heat to worry about. Neighbors actually got out of there homes and talked to one another. Families came together and helped one another. Of course after power and internet connections were restored everyone went straight back to facebook. Now I said that was good, but I imagine that things would go down hill really fast if people were told that the power outage would of been for a extended period of time.

The blackout continues on and off for a couple months.

If would be bad for traffic signals as well as many industries (those that have to throw away work in progress) and hospitals.
