Thinking Of Not Using Motorcraft & Mopar Filters..

I'm using Motorcraft filters on my 05 Toyota Matrix. Probably for the last few years. The oil goes from a light honey color to a medium honey color sometimes up to 7k miles with MC oil. Using the toyo filters the oil goes dark quickly.

Probably going to switch the 12 Camry over to MC filters as well for the same reason. Plus MC has a newer cartridge filter available that fits.

I think this guy worries more about the oil filter then the brand of parts he puts inside the engine!!

Whose quality is "nowhere near the way they used to be"? Purolator or Motorcraft (I cannot speak to Mopar)? Although the MC filters are manufactured by Purolator, they are engineered and built to Ford specifications. Though Purolator Classics and P1s have had issues, the MC issues on this site have been few and far between. I only stopped using them due to the length of the OCIs that I am running these days and had zero problems with MCs even out to 15K. Since I **doubt** your customers are doing 15K (or even 10K) OCIs on a fresh engine rebuild, I am not following your logic on the decision to stop using them.

I understand why crazyoildude is asking the question, but I agree with 2010_FX4 and ronp ... that the Motorcraft filters are engineered and built to Ford specifications .... so they are not the same as the Purolator filters like the Classics and P1s.

This Motorcraft filter showed the same tearing phenomena as all the other Puro's:

If they are not the same then why did it tear in exactly the same spot? Possibly they use a slightly different media but are put together using the same equipment that is causing the wide V spacing at the pleat.

How many MCs have we seen that have torn? <5? How many since this one? I do not think the problem is as prevalent as the Purolator issues and for the OPs topic it is essentially irrelevant since the majority of his engine rebuilds would see an OC within 1-3K miles--even a Tearolator can manage that on a good day.

I agree with 2010_FX4 - the tears are not as prevalent as the Puros. I like them and will continue to use them.

I ask everyone to bring back the car or truck at the 400-500 mile range just to check things out and i ask everyone to come in at around the 2000 mile mark for a free check up and oil change.

Kruse and razorsEdge i am looking for opinions on filters that is what this site is about.. I don't know how many Motorcrafts of Mopar filters have problems that is why i am asking. More people cut open filters here than at any shop i know of.

No worries then; even a FRAM Extra Guard or an E-Core filter could make that OCI.

Yeah I am with you oil dude. This is an oil site, and he's stressing about his oil filters. You picked the right site to manifest your OCD over oil filters. You are definitely in the right place.

Having said that, I would go with Wix.. Best cheap filter around. They know how to make a solid filter that flows well. You are not going to have any issues with them for less than 2k.

Very few Motorcraft had reported media tears - about 3 out of 60+.

I'm going to use a Motorcraft FL-500S on the new Mustang 5.0L Coyote. Should be fine, very low risk IMO base on seeing cut open FL-500S filters in this forum.

I will no longer be using anything made by Purolator. Too many of their part numbers and product lines have reported issues. It does not help that I found 2 bad Motorcrafts in a row (2 different part numbers) and a third that looked really poor but did not fail at around 1000 miles.

While 3 or 4 bad Motorcraft filters really is nothing as far as math goes. The fact that it includes Motorcraft, Mann, Bosch, Pure Ones and classics tells me that Purolator has Quality control issues that are just to big to ignore. It would be different if it was one product or one part number, but it is not.

No wonder bunch of purolator filters just went on mad clearance on rockauto for $1 to $2. I was almost about to order a PC for my 240D for $1.50, before I came to my senses and went with the Mahle.

Rock Auto has a Purolator MGL16 on clearance. It is a picture of the Oreillys MicroGard. Makes me wonder what kind of filter that thing really is. Lol.

Air filters are clearanced too.

Interesting. I believe MGL16 is the number used back when Champ made their filters.

We went with Wix for the shop filters we have a buying group of a few other shops and we buy hundreds at a time. We have been doing that for about 4 years. We have always used purolater but switched to wix when all the tearing and bad quality was reported on the purolaters. I have no problems with Wix except remembering which filter goes on what engine. With the purolaters i had the numbers in my head for most of them for over 25 years we used group 7 (purolater made) now we are very happy with the Wix and so far we won't look back.
