Thinking of changing oils

So in our DD Vibe I’ve been using SuperTech HM FS 5w30 religiously every 5k mi. It’s been good, but I was thinking if there is something better for the type of use on this car. My wife drives really far away to see patients all day and it’s really hot here in the summers 100* plus. So between driving to 8-12 different patients throughout the day the car gets shut off/restarted a bunch of times. Also, she sits in the car idling for several minutes with the AC blasting while she’s doing her documentations. The car currently has 168k mi. Any recommendations for more engine longevity?

Maybe changing oil brand/type can give you longer oil change intervals . If the oil is keeping the parts separated then that is all that is needed.

How would you ever know that a different oil is working "better" and would provide more "longevity" than what you've been doing?

I use the ST4386 Filter from Walmart as well. I don’t mind the 5k intervals at all. Just wondering if there was a better oil or trade choice for this car since she sits in it idling for up to 45 mins at times with the AC on in these 100-110* temps. I keep up with the rest of the fluids every 30k. It’s been a really good car and I’m hoping to get past the 299,999 mi. odometer limit 😂

Change it up and see if you notice any difference.. Sometimes changing additive packs can be beneficial.

If it uses oil: Valvoline Maxlife Red

To quiet engine noise: Castrol Magnatec

Long interval oil change, clean up and current rebate avail: Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Cleaning and quiet: Pennzoil anything

Value syn esp right now: Quaker State Ultimate

My reports of Super Tech are really good considering my car lives in 110+ degs and I go for almost 10k OCI's... You have nothing to worry about using this oil.

For best value without dealing with a rebate I prefer the Havoline Synthetic for $17.97 per 6 qt Box but certainly nothing wrong with QSUD. But I might be influenced by the fact my last several driver's have taken 6 quarts.

Missing information: how many miles/day (or month) does she drive?
There’s a major difference between driving all over CA to service patients and taking care of patients all within a small town. With that said, the high ambient temps and idle time assure me that this engine is seeing a lot of operation at-temperature, which is really good.

If she’s driving a lot of highway and/or the engine is at operating temperature as mentioned above (easy to do with 100F+ temps), 5kmiles intervals is likely a total waste. If you don’t believe me, send out a sample for analysis. If you like to change the oil frequently for personal pleasure, then by all means have at it. If it’s a chore, then I’d consider extending the interval with the same oil or extending the change interval using a more robust oil, if that makes you feel better.

As has been said, the cooling system and A/C seem like more important systems to maintain than worrying about engine oil, which rarely causes issues if the level is maintained and the oil changed at an appropriate frequency.

You say you keep up with the rest of the fluids every 30k, so that likely means coolant changes, right?

At that mileage, I‘d have her pay particular attention to the A/C performance and nip any underperformance in the bud before it becomes a costly repair.

We drive this car the most. Mon-Sat can be anywhere from 80-200 miles a day. Sunday is the minimal day. I end up changing the oil every 2-2.5 months. Yes every 30k I’ve been changing all the fuids. To me it’s cheap enough and fairly easy to do on this car.

How about if I went with a 0w40? Would that make it good for the start ups & a little thicker for the heat? Not trying to get the last amount of gas mileage. It does quite well there especially on the freeway.

Why would you need 40 anything in California in the winter? You know something about Glo Bull Warming we don't?

I know the ST is perfectly fine. Just wanted to see if there’s anything that could be better. These Toyota engines are a little noisy, since the day we bought it. Maybe I’ll try SatinSilver’s recommendation of Magntec or Pennzoil on the next OCI.

Isn’t this what a UOA is for? Test at the next change. You either like the numbers or you don’t.

If not, seek recommendations and proceed from there.

I’m guessing for 5K intervals Walmart synthetic is just fine. If quietness is a goal I like Castrol Edge EP a lot. Must be a brand characteristic of Castrol oils.

From your post you change your own oil, and your wife makes a living in this car. You obviously have a bit of buyers remorse in the SuperTech.. so why not just give the car a special treat? Mobil 1 EP and a Fram Ultra.

Yes it costs 2X more, but you can change it every 10K
