I'm looking for a basic home defense and plinking gun. This is cheaper than just about everything else I'm interested in ($200), has a lifetime warranty, is made in the USA, and has pretty good reviews. Everything I have read seems to suggest these are well worth the money and are decent guns overall. Any BITOGers have experience?

I know a lot of people will probably come in here and suggest $600 guns, but I'm a college student and I'm not really trying to drop a lot of coin on something that I will rarely use.

I bought mine about 8 years ago, somewhat as a novelty and for plinking as well. It has had all types of factory ammo through it and plenty of my own hot reloads and never one feeding issue or stovepipe. It was well worth the $169 I paid for it.

I think the mag is exclusive to Hi-Point, but it can be used in their pistols. At least that's what I remember reading today.

It seems some people knock Hi-Points in general, but most of what I have read from people who have actually used the carbines is good. I can't really find anything comparable. The more I read on them the more I want to buy one...

Really! What was that??

I guess it's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission...

I thought they were junk till I got to talkin' to a buddy at work. He knows firearms believe me, so when he talks I listen. He's no expert by any means but he does buy, trade, and sell quite a bit. The guns he buys, he shoots, the ones he don't like he trades or sells off.

He has a Hi-Point 9mm carbine that he has for several years. We were talkin' about the pistols one day and I told him I thought they were junk. He promptly told me about his carbine and how he has shot hundreds of rounds through it without a problem. He said for the price it is a good gun. You don't worry about it if it gets dinged. It shoots everythang he runs through it.

If he didn't like it he would have sold it, and he hasn't. He also has the .45 ACP pistol they make. He says it is the gun he takes to the chicken coop at night when the dogs start barking.

I guess if it falls in the chicken poop he ain't out a bit. Plus .45 ACP will stop most thangs that go bump in the night.

Get one! Let us know about it! The pistols are ugly but I hear they work! The carbine would be a fun plinker!

Back when I was still in high school one of my classmates had one that he managed to get two rounds stuck in the barrel (squib followed by another round) that didn't seem to hurt the barrel all that much, but there is a tab on the bolt where the recoil spring sits, and after I cleared the barrel I fired a few test rounds through it and that tab snapped off. The recoil force is likely what caused it, but I was quite unimpressed with how little metal was actually holding that tab on.

I also found it very easy to get the magazine feed lips caught on the inside of the mag well.

That said, if you can find one cheap, they're not a bad choice. I seem to have come across one of the only ones to break like that.

I've also shot the .45ACP pistol and it was the lightest recoiling .45 I've ever shot. The slide velocity was pretty low, so it was very prone to jam if you limp wristed it.

If you do end up buying one and want extra magazines avoid Pro Mag magazines like the plague. You can buy factory mags from hi-point cheaper.

Been years since I handled one of these, but as I recall they're a blowback bolt design withoutd any sort of bolt lockup. (Just like every brand .22 semi auto rifle ever built. This gives the impression of cheapness, and it is much less expensivee to build. Doesn't mean it's inferior though, as in a rifle or carbine heavier bolt and springs are perfectly acceptable. Still fires from a closed bolt.

As I stated, been a while since I'v handled one, but I'm still certian that their mag is a copy of one of the more popular pistol mags.

I do not own one myself but I have talked to a couple of different people that do. They all praise the Hi-Point carbines. I have also heard great things about the companies guarantee, in that they make any problems right and quickly with no fuss.

I am a bit of a gun snob but I was considering buying one of the Hi-Point carbines myself. I did not because I already have an AR in 9mm. Subguns or pistol caliber rifles are a ton of fun and one of my favorite things to take to the range. I say buy it, I think you will be glad you did.

With an MSRP of $220, I'm sure they sell a lot of them. Also, that's probably not the only gun on back order right now. Gun store sales of all types of guns has skyrocketed in the last several months. The owner/operator of one of the stores in my neck of the woods said October was his best month EVER.

One more comment and I'll stop thread-jacking; How in the [bleep] does Hi-Point manufacture in the USA, sell their guns at such ridiculously low prices, and still turn a profit? I checked the MSRP on their handguns - $155 for a brand new USA made gun! It's not my style, but $155!!! for a brand new American made pistol. WOW!!

OK, I'm finished.
