customer brings in a car for an oil change... i lift the hood and immediately find a reason to decline

she said she doesn't drive it much.... would have never guessed

White eggs. I wonder what species of bird laid them?
I'd tell the owner to drive the car slowly back to where it was originally parked and leave it there.
See if birds return, probably not, but if they do leave the car undisturbed until the eggs have hatched and ultimately the birds have fledged.

You declined to change her oil for fear of hdistrubing the nest or because you're worried she might blame you for any issues that are the result of her neglect, but coincidentally occur soon after you change her oil?

No birder. but that looks like a wren's nest. They nest in the darned-est places around my grounds. They produce 2-3 broods a year. They are insectivores, so I leave them be. Good luck with that

+1. If she doesn't drive it often, a few more weeks won't matter.

With that nest as insulation I suspect they'ed be fine plus the engine heat would if anything have an incubation effect.
The shop I suspect is not far from her home.
She obviously doesn't drive very aggressively for the eggs to still be in place.
The big issue would be abandonment of the nest even is she did drive straight home and park the car in the same spot.
Last spring we had a Robin build a nest and lay a clutch of eggs on the the downspout under the eve above the side gate to our backyard. We avoided going through the gate but there was still too much disturbance for the Robins likely and the nest was abandoned.

You've got to remember as well that even if they do hatch, those little birdies aren't going to leave the nest right away. That would be odd, heading to the store for a gallon of milk and having your car "chirping" in the parking lot.

My thoughts too!

But why decline? You wouldn't have to disturb the nest any more than you already have by doing an OC. Just inform the customer that there's a [censored] bird's nest in their engine bay..

Neat find though

I never see stuff like that.

we declined because our shop is very big about not taking chances with getting blamed for something going wrong with a car so we would sooner not do the work

btw the eggs were a pale blue and not white...
