Thin oil provides performance for all engine ?

If the car is slow and feels slow, there is no oil on earth that will make it fast or feel fast.

Don't you think that perhaps the engine needs to be looked after? You are concerned about it's "performance", but you do not want to address the excessive oil burning, possibly check the compression, piston deposits or other simple "tune up" things.

Power density is a huge factor, but usually only if you use it.

So if your car is driven easily in traffic then thin oil is likely fine. Oil temps will be lower. Even high powered engines are unlikely to experience damage if driven easily.

This ^^^. If your engine were in good shape, I would suggest using any 10w40 from know manufacturer. Try some High Mileage oil.

Thin oil isn't going to result in "metal-on-metal contact". "Thin oils" have been used in colder climates since the dawn of motoring, including SAE10 and SAE20...

They can and do reduce the oil film thickness to the point that the surfaces are rubbing...boundary lubrication, where the viscosity is inedequate in and of itself to keep the parts separated.

Abstract:

An examination was made on the effect of low-viscosity engine oil on fuel efficiency improvements and engine reliability for the purpose of improving fuel efficiency through the use of select engine oils. Fuel efficiency-improving effects were estimated by measuring friction torque using low-viscosity engine oil. The results show that reducing engine oil viscosity is effective for improving fuel efficiency. In examining engine reliability, attention was paid to the following two aspects which are concerns in practical performance that may arise when engine oil viscosity is reduced.

Engine oil consumption

Sliding wear at high temperatures


Tests and analyses were conducted to develop indexes for engine oil properties that are strongly correlated with each of these two concerns. A strong correlation was found between engine oil consumption and the results of a thermogravimetric analysis, and between high-temperature sliding wear and high-temperature, high-shear viscosity (HTHS). Based on these analyses, low-viscosity engine oil that can overcome the practical performance concerns was prototyped.

Clearly you've read it...and therefore understand what table 5 us demonstrating, that they hydrodynamic wedge is gone in regions, and relying on additives entirely to do the job.

The conclusion is that it can be managed, while your statement that I responded to was that it was not happening.

Quite simply, it's easy to understand just by logically thinking: The closer two objects in motion are, more than likely there'll be more friction occurring.

There's lots of people on this board who think 5w30 is a THICK oil.

How many times has there been a thread where the specification is
5W-20 but the OP pours in 5w30 by mistake and panics?

I did the exact opposite in my wife's Taurus. No reason to panic, nothing changed or happened, consumption was normal. Not the end of the world either way...
 
i read on this forum or on other forums anyone who switched higher grade oil engine feels less powerful

5w30 to 10w30
5w40 to 10w60

now i'm using valvoline maxlife 10w40

i know oil won't add 10 horses on my engine but if thin oil makes it more sensitive to gas pedal its worth to try.

max life 5w40 or other good quality 10-30 or 5-30

full synt. oils even thin have good HTHS value so why they hurts my high speed driving

I've found a better solution for baldness.... rub some white toiletparer on your head once per day.

the doubters can come look at my arse to seethe proven results!
