The Time Has Come... Ammunition Vending Machines

That is a quintessentially American vending machine, especially as they are installing it in a grocery store!

When I used to travel to Japan, frequently, I would see beer vending machines.

No ID requirement. Just a couple of 100 yen coins and you were good to go…

I thought they were great, of course.

The tech for ID in these ammo machines appears straightforward- they use the same thing to verify age for lottery ticket machines.

I agree. As advanced as it sounds, it's pretty basic now and has been in place in other areas for years. Big example in my mind are the various border entry passes.

Yeah, back in the day I visited the Yokosuka Naval Base a few times and I had exactly the same thought when I saw this!

We had them in the Army in the 70's.

Stop for beer...get your ammo. Stop for ammo...get your beer.
At my local gas station they sell most everything. Beer, wine, ammo, used guns, frozen food. just made ground beef and sausage, fresh made sandwiches and BP gas. They used to have hardware and sold so much the owners built a hardware store down the road.

Would be nice if the vending machine has an ID (DL) scanner to prevent convicts and kids from buying ammo.

On my phone, Google Chrome suggests stories to me and I've seen this a couple times. I also saw follow-ups and one said "Grocery store removes ammo vending machine". I never read those articles so I don't know any specifics....

They almost have a complete package. I've always said ATFE should be a store and I think you could get 3 of the 4 in this one store.

That beer dispenser in UA’s Narita lounge is pretty slick - fresh chilled glass each time too, er … I mean both glasses 🤓

I doubt you'll see them at airports. Reminds me of the scene with Sonny Bono in, "Airplane 2". 😄

Wasn't implying they would be in airports, just stating that the technology has been used for years in airports and other places.

Yeah it does.
It take a credit card only.
Uses a government issued id and uses facial recognition AI something or other, maybe even a guy in India to make sure the person at the machine looks like the person who scanned the ID.
Kinda like lotto ticket machines that have been around for at least 15 years, but better.
When I was 15 years old I was manufacturing my own ammo because no one would sell it to me, yeah that was potentially way more dangerous than me just buying it.

How does the facial recognition software decide, "Yeah, this is the same guy"?
Same way a human does. Can it be outsmarted ? I'd say you'd outsmart a person before you fool facial recognition. I'd also hope that if the machine has any doubt (it's not XX% confident), it defaults to "no sale".

I was in the vending machine business for 3 decades machines are expensive not a big deal if placed in the right place to return a profit. If there's profit in the machine it will survive if no profit it will die off.
