The Honda Oil Filter Thread

Hmmm. Seems this may be a filter used on 20+-years-old Hondas. This is for part number 85334 from Carquest's own Part Information website. Here is the Part information for part number 84830. Perhaps I spoke/typed too soon. It may work, but due diligence is in order.

85334 Application Summary:
  • Honda - Accord (1984-2002); Civic (1988-1997); Civic del Sol (1993-1997); CR-V (1997-2001); CRX (1988-1991); Odyssey (1995-2002); Passport (1994-2002); Prelude (1983-2001); S2000 (2000-2009)
84830 Application Summary:
  • Scion - FR-S (2013)
  • Subaru - BRZ (2013-2016)
If you want to compare specs to the Carquest Premium part number 84356, which is the "official(ish)" part, here is the link to its Parts Information page.
Yeah.. probably not worth it. I think I’ll just go with the PG4612EX

Why don't you just get the Carquest Premium that most Honda owners get ? .... 84356 which is the tall version of that PG4612EX

Interesting that they’re different sizes considering that premium guard makes the filter for Carquest.

Under their own label they have never made afaik the extended version in that taller 4610 size but they do make it for many others.. at least Carquest , STP, Microgard and a few others.

Agreed. I’ve never seen the extended version under their own brand name, only for other brands. Not sure how much of a difference there is between the two tbh. Especially since I can get the 4612EX for just over $5 per filter.

It is NOS, part number is 84830. I called the store and they said it superseded to part number 85334, which is the same size as a Fram 9688/3593A.
Right. There's basically only two Honda filter sizes. Older Hondas took the 9688/3593a size (also M1-104 in mobil 1 branding).

Since the late 90s or early 2000s, Honda has uses the taller, skinnier filter known as x7317 (fram) or 4610 (purolator) or 84356 (carquest) or 57356 (wix).

There is a shorter version of the x7317 size can that is used on many Nissans. It is the x6607 in the Fram number system. Some filter vendors cross reference the shorter 6607 to 7317 applications, as it of course will fit in every case here a 7317 fits. However, it is smaller and has less space for media.

In most instances, the 6607 can be used without any detriment in a 7317 application. In highly transient duty cycles with lots of short trips and cold starts, the reduction in oil pressure delay from the smaller filter might be a net good thing.

Most of my trips to work/college are about 90% highway. The only real city driving I do is on the weekend. I figure it’s fine as all of the specs are extremely close to the CARQUEST filter that is specific to my Honda.

(y)Sweet. Been using them for many years. I don't care at all how many different times they changed manufacturers, those filters have always arrived at my house exactly the same. Nice quality in and out one can clearly see when you open the box. I also like they all come plastic wrapped to keep tiny particles and debris out of them. I also never found them any more expensive than others.

Where do you find those? None of the Honda dealers near me stock them.
My local dealer i deal with had one case in stock so I grabbed it. Hes got a big shipment coming in he told me and he says honda ships whatever they have mixed between A02 and 003s but doesn't always get them. Ill buy cases if he gets them if anyone wants to buy them

I'm curious the cost per filter? Is there difference in case price per vs individual? 003 made by Mahle Tennex.

I note a comment saying the A02 basically a Fram Tough Guard in a blue can. Seen the PH also often mentioned in similar manner. Best information says OEM efficiency not close to the same ballpark as PH or TG rating. My suspicion the 003 very similar in that respect to A02.

Fwiw, for me and my Hondas, I'll stick with my aftermarket filter of choice. Always has worked for me.

15400-RTA-003 are the Japan made filters. 15400-PLM-A02 are the Fram filters. Basically a blue Fram Tough Guard.
The 02 is a lot closer to the Extra Guard (orange can) than the Tough Guard (silver can).

I don't think I've ever used a Honda filter. It's been a variety of Fram, Wix, STP, Mobil 1, CarQuest. Based on the almost 345,000 miles on the vehicle, I think they've performed OK.
