OK, poor choice of words in my part. Mocking Palin didn't even enter my mind when I made that post.

They are incurring mounting massive damage costs every second oil spills from their well. They are losing money on oil every second the well is not capped or the oil recovered. The PR nightmare while not impossible to overcome (how many still boycott Mobil over the Exxon Valdez) is tremendous. Also this tragedy can possibly lead to stopping or curtailing further off shore drilling. I just do not see how this benefits BP or the oil industry,

If they plugged the well, all they'd have is clean-up...never drill that hole again.

If they keep the situation going, they'll have time to drill their relief wells and be able to pump that hole dry.

I know you work in the oil industry Bryan, but when the CEO of BP says the leak is "relatively small" compared to the size of the gulf and comes out claiming the US is litigious and that many lawsuits against BP will be frivolous? It's blatantly obvious to me that BP only cares about saving the well and it's bottom line. The evidence is clear that they, along with Transocean, were negligent in the operation of the Deepwater Horrizon.

I have nothing against the oil industry, but I can not stand blatant negligence and greed, along with corruption. Seems to me that's all we have up to this point with BP.

How it is being handled, IMO is too slow and dangerous, however, what part of what the CEO said is NOT true? Are you inferring that there will not be frivolous lawsuits? lol. There will be too many. And the "Lawyer's monopoly" will be leading the way - raking in hundreds of millions in fees for every few hundreds of thousands that is paid out.

This was a monumental cock-up on BP's behalf. Let's see how this is going to affect the future energy plans.

Short term savings of $500k, long term damage of $billions.

I never thought getting oil from the bottom of the ocean was this simple. I mean, you drill the hole and the oil just starts pouring out to the surface? Really?? Don't you have to expend energy and force to pump it out? How is the oil overcoming the so called 1 ton per square inch of pressure to gush out?

As you can see, I did NOT do my graduate studies in oil exploration :-)

I hate to say it, but i think for an oil company, BP has done a good job with this situation they found themselves in - they took responsibility for it right away, and said they would be paying for the clean up. They're doing a lot better than Exxo did in 1989 - no-one can deny that.

It took 9 months to cap Ixtoc-1 in the gulf in 1979, and it spewed out a lot more oil than what is coming out of this well, and the gulf survived. BP is moving pretty darn quick, considering the technical challenges they are dealing with.

Unless you quit driving, oil/gas from the Gulf will be in your tank for the foreseeable future!

Well, I talk like that! I've been using "You betcha" both verbally and in my internet posts long before a certain former Alaska governor became well known. And I'll continue to do so.

I realize some areas of the country that is normal speak...I have relatives from Minnesota and have visited there a time or two.. However having read many of Drews posts and not remembering anything like that being written..as well as the subject and comment on oil drilling..is why I made that comment.

I suggest you copy and paste this in your sig then....it might save you a bunch of verbal abuse around here.

I think BP is a genius, now once we have turned the Gulf and East coast of most of the southern states shorelines into a gigantic oil field, still have to kill off those pesky mantees and dophins, they may disturb shipping, we can really get down to drilling. We cany hurt anything if its already covered in crude anyway right. Those beaches are overrated, tourism has been way down anyway. Florida, the NEW TEXAS! I am going to buy me a cowboy hat tomarrow like J.R Ewing.

We ain't seen nothing yet. We've seen a "spectacle" as the prez called it and that was just the overture...it's gonna get much more interesting until the fat lady sings! BP has Exxon as an example so the excuses and legal battles have just begun; to say nothing of the big lies to come so they can raise oil prices. Never mind that the well wasn't even in production.

That's about the most STUPID comment I've read in a LONG time, and I've read some idiotic junk on BITOG.

There really wasn't much free market about this. Nope, just another failure by trusting in regulations to "protect us".
