I can't see how it would have worked, personally.
In order to overcome the pressure driving the oil flow, it needs to be heavy enough to press down sufficienctly to cap the flow. either needs to be an infinitely dense product wafer thin, or a less dense product, of some significant height to restrain the flow, or flow back down the line.
Would (IMO) need a circular "tank" built around the leak, of whatever height is necessary to get the pressure on the column of oil.
That being said, while it's flowing, it will grab and carry mud until there's enough mud height to slump in and choke it. once choked, there's a chance.
As to junk shots, when we have high pressure steam leaks, we engage specialist to drill into 2600psi, 1005F pipes, and inject steel wool and various forms of rubber/cermic etc. fillers to form a net, and then a plug.
If it's an open pipe, there's nothing to grab the shredded material, nothing to form a net, and therefore no chance of a plug forming.
