The Drive: Look What Happens to a Low-Mile Ford Diesel With Tons of Idle Time and No Maintenance

We've has several yard spotters come in over the last few years that had stopped running and wouldn't start. Turns out the grid heaters were so plugged up, they couldn't get any air. Talking a mountain of soot, several inches deep. Egr coolers plugged too. All from excessive idle and low duty cycle. Haven't seen one yet this year....yet

Root cause is buying the wrong engine for application. This was stated to be a yard truck only. This should have been spec'd as a gas engine--not diesel. Of course maint is horrible here but the real issue is not using the right tool for the job.
