Mystic, I once was a Democrat. I grew up in the Midwest. Years ago the Democratic party had at its heart a genuine concern for the needs for working people and those less successful in our economy. The policies of the party in those years contributed greatly to the quality of life of working people, and that legacy is a positive one today.
The old Democratic party was conservative on moral values and on defense. Think of Harry Truman.
Unfortunately, in the last 20 years, the Democratic party has become heavily influenced by an extreme liberal activist wing. This wing is very secular, antimilitary, pro-abortion, is opposed to the culture having a moral center in traditional values. The Michael Moores of the country are loved by that radical wing. That's why he has friends and supporters who are prominent Democrats.
Ten years ago I voted about 75% for Democratic candidates. Now I vote 90% Republican. I will be voting for President Bush. I don't agree with everything he does. I believe all wars are tragedies, but some are necessary, e.g. Iraq. I don't say that lightly; six men in our family are on active duty in our military, one served in the war last year and has been told that he is going back in January. The consequences of the Iraq decision are very personal for our family. I think the war was well planned but we have clearly struggled in the occupation. Some of that was inevitable, but we could have done better.
I have considered the Kerry positions on many issues, and in weighing them, I find that I believe the Republican policies are better for the country in the long term.
The far left hates traditional American values. They hate Bush with a passion not seen against a President since the 1930's. Mystic, I understand the disappointment you feel. Sadly, the Democratic party today is far different from the one that has dome so much for the good in our country. I think in years to come, you'll be comfortable with the wisdom of your move to the Republican side.
