The Corolla Prizms

Ok next question, is the 1ZZFE engine a lot better than the 1.6 & 1.8 models that were in the mid 90s?

I'd say that my 95 Prizm was like a smaller 4th gen Camry. Same quiet and buttoned up reliability.

hard to say; oil consumption issues aside. I have a 94 7AFE Corolla (1.8L 5 speed) and it consumes a bit of oil as well, but the 1ZZs have 10/20 more horsepower compared to to the 1.8L/1.6L Corollas/Prizms from 93-97, respectively.

That said, I had an 02 Corolla LE 4 speed auto and I sold it; my 94 is a better car. It's quicker, more reliable, better build quality, better fuel mileage.

If you have the funds, I'd look for a later model Corolla, like a 2003 - 2008, which will be a 4 speed auto (super reliable), or a 5 sped manual. The later model 5 speeds have throwout bearing issues and some 5 speeds from 93 - 2008 have 3rd/5th gear premature synchro problems. A 2003-2008 4 speed auto is about the most bullet proof car you can buy, and Toyota mostly fixed the oil consumption issues in the 1zz that plagued earlier generation Corollas.

I had a 1.6L 1991 Corolla SR-5 for a few years. Very reliable engine, barely used any oil while I had it.

I had it from roughly 70k to 130k; then I sold it to a buddy who got it to almost 250k, IIRC.

Rust is the only thing that stopped it; the rear spring mounts rusted out completely and the car collapsed on itself. It ran perfectly until the end.

Yeah not as common with a 5-speed. There's 4 of them in Phoenix with a 5-speed on Craigslist. Here's an example:

Off Topic: I don't know why there's an angry face at the top of my posts? Several of my posts have been weird. Maybe I bump something, I don't know lol.

Nah doesn't sound too bad. About as involved as my 2.2L Camry was and I did it myself.

Thanks for the heads up though, I didn't think about these ones as timing belt motors, now I realize it's the 98+ that are timing chains, DUH! Lol.

If I look at any older ones like those ill make sure the timing belt has been changed, if they don't know it needs a price drop.

If you find a Corolla WAGON, it's more likely to have the 1.8/ 4 speed instead of the 1.6, and I don't even know if they made those at NUMMI.

Huh, weird. Did some looking. Not the easiest, but it looks like they used A131L for 3AT and A245 for 4AT. The 3spd used a 3.52 FD while the 4spd is a 0.89 4th with 2.92 FD. So 3k rpm vs 2.2k at 60mph.

The irony? I drove a couple of the last gen Corollas, and both 5MT/4AT spun.... 3k at 60mph.

I "helped" on my BEW the first time. This Toyota is about the same level of work. On the BEW, at least on a Jetta, uses locks on crank/cam, but the alt and valve cover stay in place. Inner fender lining and the lower boost pipe come off. There is a roller, and the tensioner is odd; but then again the crank pulley bolts are not too bad.

Oops, remember wrong. Must be thinking of a different car.

2009-2013 Corolla is 2333rpm at 60mph for 4AT, 2523rpm at 60mph for 5MT. With base 195 tires, although the LE tires are slightly shorter (more rpm, but not much).

Prizm (Prison?) is 3029rpm at 60 for 3AT, 1696rpm for 4AT, and 2641rpm for 5MT. For 185/65R14 anyhow. But I have to question if that link is correct, the FD / cruising rpm sounds wrong.

Found my mistake. A245 4AT is 2162 at 60mph, 1993-1996, 2034 rpm for 1997-2002. Still pretty low.

So the 4 speed auto would probably get better mpg in the highway than the 5 speed stick right? That's a big jump!

Possible, but not probable. The automatic likely has higher drag from its guts, and it has a pump to run also. Stick may beat it if you know what you are doing, without too much work. Around town the convertor will like to unlock, and of course the car will fight you while braking.

But yeah, either will get the job done.

The 3AT seems like it was 30mpg vs 35 or more on 5MT/4AT.

I don't have a budget yet. I might look at $2,000 cars, I might look at $3,000 cars. Not sure yet, still going to wait a couple months.

Cost doesn't always mean you get a better car. I paid $1,700 for my 97' Camry and it was a pretty nice car and never gave me a single issue.

Did you start advertising your car yet? not clear if you have access to "spare" vehicles to use if you manage to sell yours. I'm guessing that sale would help fund the next, or at least start the repair fund.

I'm not sure what's happening with the Beetle. My aunt might end up with it as another daily driver for her or I might sell it. No big plans yet, regardless I'm buying another car lol.

If need be I can borrow my grandfather's Jeep Cherokee to use to commute if I'm inbetween cars.

I'd use the 1970 Beetle to commute inbetween cars but the clutch is about done.
