I recently bought a vacuum fluid extraction pump for very cheap. I’ve attached a picture of the pump I bought. I’ve always been a diy backyard mechanic, and I fix everything on my own if it doesn’t require a lift, but I never owned or used a vacuum pump like this for some reason. Prior to buying this tool, I always did a pan drop for fluid changes, which always makes a big mess.
But anyways, this thing can hold a little over 2 quarts of fluid.
I just sucked out about 5 quarts of atf with this pump out of my 4l60e through the dip stick tube. I sucked out all I can with it. I did a pan drop and a filter change about a year ago, so I’m not worried about the filter.
The fluid that came out with this pump looked really good. Zero visible clutch materials at all, and the fluid was dark but still red. Super happy about that. After sucking the fluid out, I added Valvoline Maxlife ATF.
I wish I bought something like this sooner because it makes fluid changes very easy, and makes zero mess. This should also work awesome for power steering fluid changes and even differential fluid changes with no drain plug.
I suggest buying this type of suction tool for all diy people out there if you don’t have one yet, because I believe that if I suck everything out of the pan and refill it with new atf about every 6months, my transmission should really never develope any fluid related problems, and I probably can extend the filter change intervals a little bit. I plan on changing the trans filter about every 5 years, because I don’t drive the truck a whole lot.
This tool allowed me to change about half of the fluid in the transmission in less than 15 minutes.
If you don’t have a pump like this. Try buying one. It really makes fluid maintenance super easy, especially on parts with no drain plug.
