"Bulk" means unbottled oil, sold in 55-gallon drums. That's why it's cheaper -- you don't pay for the bottle. You return the empty drum afterwards. They don't sell 55-gallon drums to customers but only to dealers.

My point was that since it is being supplied in bulk to dealers you can often have your local Toyota dealer fill up some empty oil jugs as I explained in my link.
at a discount .

I guess you could ask for that, but then how do you know what they are actually putting in your empty bottle?

The drums are clearly marked as TGMO 0W-20 so you can watch the mechanic fill your jugs. In Canada all Toyota/Lexus dealers only use TGMO but I know that's not necessarily the case in the States.
It's not hard to verify what you're getting.
We do have at least one UOA of TGMO 0W-20 that the member had some jugs filled as described. No question it was TGMO.

The point of mentioning this is to provide all available options to members that still find the product expensive at their local Toyota dealers.

BTW I recently got a PM from member pbm who picked up a couple of 12qt cases for 50 bucks/case in NY. That's $4.16/qt.
The oil may be cheaper on the east coast since the formulating plant is in NJ IIRC.

Well, it's good that you can get the milk directly from the cow.

Toyota has fixed wholesale prices on TGMO -- both for bulk and bottles/cases. I don't know if Toyota actually charges the dealers when it ships them parts. In any case, it sounds like it was just a good dealer. They are hard to find.

interested in how much more "knowledge" has been gained on this fairly scant information over the last 3 months.

Great question. Not much. That's something rather disappointing. We have UOA's, which look as good as any, but other than that most of what we know of TGMO is speculation based on information gathered from the internet.

TGMO oil (presumably any of the variants) was specifically designed to the lubrication needs of the Prius.

As for 0w-20 oil it appears we have more knowledge about Mobil than the Toyota oil. If I owned a Prius I would certainly run the TMO since it was specifically designed for that cars' unusual properties (atkinson cycle, stop/start, computer-controlled RPM), but I see no value in using it for other cars.

For example I tested it in a Honda and saw no difference versus the Mobil 1

I'll be putting it in my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek very soon so we will see how it goes in the Subie 2.0

I bought a case of it tonight for 64.68 or 5.39 a quart

YES, at one time in the somewhat recent past, an oil loaded up with the old style polymeric VIIs would; shear, break down, sludge, etc.
But supposedly the newest/latest iteration of sky high VI boosting VIIs, do not exhibit these same negative characteristics as the older stuff did, save for possibly being more volatile by nature.

It does seem that no one really knows for sure though.

The problem is that most of these Toy dealers in my area (now AND when I was in Joyzee) have a really high zoot, elitist attitude, especially if they are also a Lexus dealer.

Hence, even if they were willing to fill the TGMO from their drums (which I could almost guarantee you they would NOT be willing to do), they would STILL charge you the $8.75 to $10.50 a quart they get for the bottled stuff around here, even in case lots (IF they even have THAT).

I WISH that XOM would bottle and sell this stuff on the open market (and on the shelves at Sino Mart) as their own 0W-20, so we would NOT have to deal with Toy at all.

Current MSRP of TGMO 0W-20 SN is $7.17. If any dealer tries to sell it to you for higher than MSRP, show the printout of this Web page (link) and tell them that they are jerks trying to rip you off.

This said, my engine hasn't run better on any oil than on TGMO 0w-20 SN. This is far from being a scientific experiment of course, given that I haven't tried all the oils out there and there are other factors such as maintenance and repairs. Nevertheless, it's running really smoothly.

Apparently that was a one shot deal...when I contacted the guy again he couldn't mach that price.

At any rate, TGMO 0w20 is a much better deal than the High Moly Mazda OE 0w20, which dealers want an arm and a leg for.
If I had a new Mazda I'd probably use TGMO.

You are more likely to get a discount if you buy in quantity. MSRP is $7.17 and the actual cost to dealers is a lot less. Anywhere between $5 and $6 is a great deal for this top-quality premium synthetic carefully balanced and tuned for engine longevity, fuel economy, and performance. Few oils will match it in overall quality if any at all. I am suspecting that it also uses trinuclear moly, something only a few oils have.
