The video published on Gruber's YouTube channel explains Roadsters with batteries reaching their end of life will experience a significant decrease in power when their packs begin to fail, being unable to exceed 60 miles per hour, safely merge onto a highway, or even go up hills. These findings, though, come from an unexpected source. Gruber has discovered that while Roadsters with their original 200-mile-range battery packs are still healthy, cars fitted with the upgraded 400-mile-range pack that Tesla began offering in 2016 are the ones starting to fail.

The very first Tesla Roadsters were sold back in 2008 and are now 15 years old. Gruber cites the automaker's original Chief Technology Officer, JB Straubel, as claiming the expected lifespan of those original first-generation multi-cell battery packs was 10 years. However, Straubel himself, who owns one of the earliest Roadsters, remarked publicly last year he's surprised to report his car is still going strong, and he has revised his estimate of the original pack's lifespan up to 15 years. Gruber's own data supports this, with the company reporting that most of the Roadsters it services with the original 200-mile-range battery pack are still healthy with no signs of slowing down.

Tesla no longer supports the roadster in any way.
Tesla service centers are busy with the S, X, and 3, and as a result, don't have much time to work on the 2500-or-so Roadsters the company built. Moreover, some of the personnel who worked on the Roadster when it was new have since left the company. So if you own a Roadster, you need a specialist. In the Pacific Northwest, your guy is Carl Medlock. The irony is that Tesla quit making or distributing parts for the roadster.

It does seem odd that a newer upgraded battery pack would fail but not the original
 
I've been playing with Li batteries from the start. I don't have any that made it 10 years without significant degradation. Not Panasonic cells, not Sanyo cells, None of them.
 
What bothers me more is if what’s reported about Tesla no longer servicing or making parts for the roadster is true then people effectively have a car that can only be fixed using used parts. It’s not like millions were made and there’s aftermarket support.

In another discussion, the 15 year lifespan was discussed. That seems to be the only design criteria today, 15 years.
 
I've been playing with Li batteries from the start. I don't have any that made it 10 years without significant degradation. Not Panasonic cells, not Sanyo cells, None of them.

In what applications? A rechargeable pack for smaller appliances compared to a large pack with thermal management and liquid cooling is quite a different thing. It's why earlier Nissan Leafs are so dependent on where they are operated for how long the battery lasts, no real form of thermal management.

A "panacea" no. I agree.

The question is, which is a better bet given everything we know and have seen?

I'd choose a cylindrical every time if I had a choice.

Hah us Volt people will have the same issue.

It really depends on how they are treated. If you keep them between 20%-80% SOC, never deeply discharge them and manage temperatures then they can last a very long time. Have designed some medical devices with backup batteries using LG cells that get abused by customers regularly and they barely last 3 years. Frequent deep discharges are not kind.
 
US-made, US-market Model 3 RWD cars get the Chinese LFP prismatic batteries too.

That means tesla loses the 7500 credit.

I wouldnt buy a car without a 4680 pack at this stage.

For sure. Tesla.com just posted a warning that the RWD Model 3 loses the full tax credit on April 18th.
