Tesla Discontinues Model X and Model S

That is interesting because I thought the S was their flagship and it is a nice looking car for the most part and FAST in plaid form. Every automaker usually trys to have their halo car to promote the brand and have something to "move up to" in the line up.

Tesla Discontinues Model X and Model S. Tesla claims they’ll someday make Optimus robots in that factory space.

Ahh you beat me to it. Jalopnik ran a story about this as well. You'd think they'd axe the Cybertruck while they were at it. The earnings call was bad. Tesla had a 61% fourth quarter year over year decline! Annual profit cratered 46% in 2025 and vehicle revenue is down 11% . The weird thing is that last week Electrek or one of the ev sites hinted at the Model y three row being sold in the USA.

Makes total sense, if you look at the sales numbers for the Model S and Model X. What doesn't make sense, is that they are not replacing them with new models, rather than robots. What's with that?

Optimus isn't as far along as Musk claims. Numerous Tesla employees have spoken out saying they're still remote controlled and not autonomous. Just a few weeks ago at another demo an Optimus robot fell over trying to hand out water bottles.

If you look at all of the made up garbage Musk spews you'll see he claims "everyone will have their own robot and not need to work and we won't need money. "

precisely. sales numbers were low, but they had a role in Tesla's product mix. Looks like they are giving that role to cyber track now, or perhaps a new sport model is on the way

Not a surprise... I've said this before but we need a CyberSuburban... a boxy full-size 3-row SUV built on the Cybertruck platform but with a slightly more conventional looking exterior and proper interior space instead of the bed. It would be the perfect vehicle IMO!

When there was a bigger gap between the mainstream Teslas and the premium Teslas, it made sense to have the S and X around. But as they improve the 3 and Y (owners who have had prior gen and current gen vehicles all say how much better the Juniper/Highland are than the previous ones) the S and X aren't "needed" for people that want a "nice" vehicle. And you get the same features at half the price. Sure they are smaller but the S/X are not "family hauler" vehicles anyway so the 3/Y make more sense for most people.

So given that sedans are outdated anyway and the Model 3 is pretty good nowadays especially in upper trims, and the Cybertruck is cheaper than the Model X, makes the S/X completely pointless. Many current S/X owners will simply move to another Tesla vehicle as nobody else offers the same features and software. S owners will go to the 3 or Y and X owners will go to the Y or Cybertruck.

Sure, a few people will move to Lucid or Rivian but unless people ditch their Tesla for political reasons (which despite being all over the news is actually not very common, by the numbers), Tesla owners are quite loyal!

Rivian has a future but Lucid really doesn't IMO.

I think the reason Model S sales are down is because a refresh is long overdue. Nice looking for sure, but who wants a very expensive, unreliable vehicle.

The realistic approach might be to buy a 5 year old Model S with a good battery (you can test for that) and being prepared to pay for some fairly expensive repairs.

I'm not much of a Tesla fan but I thought the S was a nice looking car, the latest facelift especially. The X has always looked bulbous and strange to me.

Not sure how they justified keeping the Cybertruck considering how poorly it's been received.

The Model S was the most successful and emblematic car of the prior decade.

The Model Y has a shot of achieving that this decade.

If Elon hadn't gone deep into politics (which includes the pointless buyout of Twitter) and the daily sewage of making sensationalist statements, Tesla would now be investing several billions more into their R&D projects.

It's a sad reality... but reality it is.

I don't see model X owners jumping to a y or Cybertruck. Supposedly rumors are that the 3-row model y might make it to the USA, but where would it be built. Then throw in layoffs at the Tesla plant in Germany due to slow sales.

My biggest dislike about Musk is that he likes to pick fights with other people or CEO'S IE see his Ryan Air spat last week. Instead of seeing a sales opportunity he just makes fun of people. I really hope he gets his comeuppance.

Rivian has actually has the R2 in production as of Monday.

I must be some sort of Hellseher, I predicted some years ago that the Berlin plant would go under and Musk gets the boot out of Europe.
Now the "genius" only has 2 models to sell, that is not going to cut it, the Koolaid drinkers can only support the company so long before they throw in the towel.
