I noticed that the white teflon tape that is used to wrap around pipe threads have a MIL T-27730A. I thought MIL spec means that it is suitable for military use or something like that. What is the purpose of the MIL spec for the teflon tape?

There are plenty of consumer products that would meet Mil-Spec, if tested. The problem is that the expense of qualifying the product to Mil-Spec may not be worth it for the manufacturer. That's how we end up with $700 toilet seats and $200 hammers.

Looks pretty clear to me.

It's a canceled Mil Spec with a reference to a purchase spec. It says what the tape can be made from and specifies some testing requirements. If you trust the company, it's some useful information about the product.

The vendor claiming the tape meets the spec is no worse than boutique oil companies claiming they meet specs without actually getting their products qualified.

Gutfinski, the famous toilet seats and hammers are a result of someone ordering very low quantities of parts against complicated specs. Items used in high quantities cost very little more when Mil qualified. I have seen purchase prices for Mil qualified grade 8 fasteners and Mil-L-2104 HDEO purchased on gmnt contract. In both cases, they were less than I paid for identical product from the same manufacture in local stores. The two examples I remember seeing were Mobil Delvac 15w40 and the grade-8 fasteners sold by OSH in San Jose, CA.

Mechtech brings up a good point. I buy a great teflon tape at West Marine. It's only $2.00 a roll and is certified for use with gasoline, oil, propane, steam, and a long list of other chemicals. Works great!
