Tall (vs short) filters reduce flow or pressure?

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with a 2.4, 2RZ-FE motor. The motor has 157,000 miles and I run Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil, 5w30 oil.

Probably like a lot of people, I like the idea of using a taller filter than what the factory installs. My stock filter is a 90915-YZZG1 that has 121 sq. in. of media. Alternatively, a lot of people (myself included) use the 90915-YZZD3 which has 203 sq. in. of media. It's height is approximately 4.1 inches.

The filter I'm thinking about using is the Purolator PureONE PL20195, which has 213 sq. in. of media. It's height is approximately 4.74 inches. It sounds like a great filter that's a direct replacement for the stock 90915-YZZG1 or the 90915-YZZD3, and people are very happy with it!

I thought before I order this filter I'd ask you all - as a general rule, do you think it's O.K. to substitute taller filters for shorter ones? Will using a taller filter adversely impact the flow and/or oil pressure of your motor if you do use taller filters?

No, everything would be better, unless they use significantly cheezier media.

A bigger filter will generally equate to more flow and lower presssure drop(considering similar media but larger area). Try a wix 51516, that's what I use in my Taco.

That's a good filter size but the 20195 has been one of the models with some tears reported in other users. I'd use a Fram Ultra XG 3600.

I used to use the 20195 on my Taurus but now I use the XG3600.

Looks like 5 failed 20195s so far. Too many for me to use them anymore.

I used the 20195 on my 2.7 Tacoma, switched to the Even bigger Fram XG8A.
No problems with the PL20195, but scared by tears plus better construction of the Ultra. I change it every 15k miles (every other oil change).

I don't know about you, or other people, but I don't place a lot of concern in 5 filters. From that I've seen on the web, there's very little, of what *I* would call, credible evidence that the quality of these filters might be suspect. But, that's just me - I really "don't have a dog in the fight." From what I've seen, the post might be somewhat current, but if you dig into the remarks, the filter may have been several years old when it was put into service, etc., etc.

I'm guessing that between Purolator and Fram, they take their share of bashing "just because". Some people just seem to hate successful companies - I'll never understand why. But, thank you for the links as well.

I used to have PL20195(and its cousin Bosch Premium) in my 1994 LS400 for many years, but I stay away from them since reports about media tearing appeared on this forum the last 2 years.

I didn't cut open any oil filter, so I relied on others who cut open their filter(s), there are many good filters on market for similar in price with Purolator, I don't see any reason to use suspected oil filter.

I run an XG3600 & Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 on the xB in my sig, & somewhere on here there's a used oil analysis & pictures of the cut open Ultra-it went 10,000+ miles, would have been good for 20,000!

Just to clarify, "lower delta-p pressure" across the oil filter, but not lower engine oil pressure. The flow really won't increase, unless you had that engine red lined with cold oil, due to the positive displacement oil pump going into max pressure relief mode.

ZeeOSix - This guy's website (which is a few years old) is where I got the 213 sq. in. number from, but I don't know how accurate he was or maybe things have changed? Look at the chart at the bottom.

On my Lexus GS400 I put on the Wix 51515, it fits perfectly, longer would even work. Not sure on your 4 cyl what would fit. My wife Lexus RS330 there is no way to fit the fat base 51515, so I use a 51516.

Looking at his numbers I think something is wrong, because if the pleats were really 0.375" deep like he shows, and the total length was 62", then there would have to be about 82 pleats in the filter. It could be that Purolator changed the pleats over time, as the data in that link you found is pretty old.

The last PL20195 I cut open had 67 pleats, 3/8" deep x 3-3/8" long. That comes out to ~170 sq-in.

Unless you know that the media is the same, comparing square inches on different brands of filters is meaningless.

^^^ In the last couple of post, he's comparing media sq-in on the same exact filter, the PL20195. But yeah, in general you're comment is right.
