In IL it doesn't matter if you renew 6 mo. later you'll get the same month as is on the plate/tags. I think when I asked the DMV they said I had a year time frame to renew. Before you have to get a new plates altogether.

I think the LEO will give a pass for a few days after expiration.

I got caught having it 2 mo/expired. Paid it(sticker)had a court date of 12/24 went to court to show the Judge I'm current. Had a hugh snow storm that day but I made to court seeing of a things in the courtroom SANTA on the bench.

He said to the 4 people that show up, I made it 5. Since you few went too the trouble arriving here at the proper time. I have a present for you! Down the line he'd ask the clerk to read the charges for us 5. Then the judge pick up his gavel and said HO HO HO your off! Charges dismissed! We 5 never said a word but Merry Christmas Judge! True story!

In my state, the registration always stays the same month. They charge extra after something like five days....I don't remember. I haven't had an expired registration in well over a decade.

But the inspection sticker will be whatever month you inspect in. I always let it lapse. I figure if I ever keep a car for 12 years, I'll get a "free" inspection sticker.

Traffic judges are pretty good about dismissing lapsed inspection sticker tickets if you get it within 5 days of expiration. Your results may vary.

I might go ahead and get it registered and add that amount of money to the asking price. Unless you are worried that you might sell it to someone who is going to use it in a criminal act.

When I moved from WI to KY technically you are supposed to get a new license and new tags within ten days of moving into the state. I let my plates and license go until the plates expired. They never questioned anything. KY is dumb, their plate renewal month is based on the month of your birthday. If you move into the state they do not prorate that year's tags unless you are a couple months away from your birthday month. Dumb.

I presume in your state your plates stay with you, not the car.

Can you transfer a plate with 11 months on it to some other car, so if you renew it you aren't out lots of money?

My state has, by law, a month grace period where you can only get a warning for expired registration. But if you renew late you don't get any free time.

You might get trouble if you use on-street parking.

Yes we keep the tag, and if it have some month left, they can credit it to new tag when u come back register new car.

Are you still driving it?
If not, why renew? It's for sale. If it expires before it's sold, tell any potential buyers that the tags are expired so any test drives are at their own risk.

Unless you are driving this everyday, or you park it on the street where the police might ticket or tow due to expired tags, I'd let it slide.

How much is it to renew the tags?

Can you transfer them to a replacement vehicle? Now if you can do that and are planning to buy something soon after you sell this, it may cost a bit more, but covers you if you renew the tags with the intent of transferring them.

Without knowing a bit more about your circumstance, all I can do is pose some questions for thought stimulation.

Here in IL, we can renew up to one month late at the same fee, but at the risk of getting pulled over and ticketed. One month later, the tags go from $99 to $119. To transfer is $25, IIRC, so if I'm buying another car, I can transfer the plates to the "new" car. So any plates with 3 months or more time left on them are cheaper to transfer than get new plates.

But your mileage may vary depending on your circumstance.

yes I am still driving it, its my DD, when im sell the car, usually we take the tag off the car. and if your tag still have some month left, u can turn in the tag and they credit it, and gave u a receipt, then when u buy new tag, show them the receipt, and they credit that on your new tag and just pay the different. but its not expire til end of the month.

In my state its possible to get temporary plates for a fee instead of full registration. You may want to check into your state on that.
