Synthetic oils/Extended drains

So I am using the Amsoil SDF-15 filters that are oversize for my application. Help me to understand, but from what I have been reading, I can leave these filters in for 10,000 miles? I put 30,000+ miles on my truck a year. I change my oil (synthetic) and filter every 5,000 miles. I am now led to believe that I can leave my filter on for 10,000 miles. This would save me big time on the filter costs! about $12.00 per filter!

Those may be great filters, but can you get them for passenger vehicles?

I agree with Gary's list of good filters. However, I would put the Amsoil Ea one step above the others since it is a full synthetic media. The others are all synthetic blends. I would also add one more filter to the list of "top line" filters. Fram Extended Gaurd (X2) which is also a full synthetic media filter.

Hmmm...you're a frequent flyer. You can't be putting much out in terms of loading unless you have a mechanical issue. I'd double that OCI/filter change.

Do a used oil analysis with a particle count. Do one at 5k. If the oil is likely to last to 10k (I can't see it not making it with that level of mileage in such a short timespan) ..leave it and the filter alone. Do another particle count. If the cutoff point is the same (that is, the count is just a multiple of the first count and no new threshold of larger particles has been reached) then the filter is not loaded and isn't bypassing to any appreciable amount.

I would think that you would be able to get 15k+ out of a filter before it was too loaded for acceptable service. The level of filtration should be the only variable depending on which filter you use.

..but to directly answer your question, I wouldn't change out the filter in your service for at least 10k.

Sounds like you may have a 4.0L, Ford V-6 engine in that truck? (Ford Ranger or Mazda B4000?)

You should be able to change both the synthetic oil and the filter every 10k with no problem. If you really want a big filter, try the EAO-26, which is about two inches longer than what you have on there.

Doug Hillary used to use the Donaldson ELF filters (Synteq media) out to 100,000km (60,000 miles) in his DD60 Series engines.

I use a Donaldson Synteq FL1-A equivalent filter in two vehicles. (P169071) The Baldwin equivalent is B2HPG, and Fleetguard/Cummins LF3487.

Thanks for the info. I have a Dodge Durango 2K3. 4.7 liter engine. "I should have put that in the beginning statement!" I go 100 miles a day to and from work. Rarely do I drive my Audi to work. That is my weekend car. I am using Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 right now. I have a large supply of Supertech Synthetic I have to use up too. From what I have been reading that should also go the 10K distance. I will now change my filter at 10K. Again thanks for the info.

Yes, the PH8A style Ford filter is, in the one I buy the most of, BALDWIN B2-HPG and DONALDSON P169071 (and the FLEETGUARD piece cross-references those).
