Synthetic oil change scam?

I heard a guy at AUtozone telling a customer the same darn thing. Customer asked about synthetic ATF and was told " SYnthetic ATF is great but once you use it you cannever go back to regular ATF or it will ruin your transmission!"?????

I wouldn't be so sure. The temps in the turbo cooling lines are such, that the oil is very much prone to coking, and dino will coke more easily than synthetic, regardless of OCI.

MADMIKE,

I can't prove you're wrong, but I stand by my original position as it relates to dino oil in that particular engine.

Even "Consumer Reports" recommends using synthetic oil in these VW/Audi, Dodge, Toyota/Lexus, and Saab sludgmonsters. CR's alternate strategy is to get 3000 mile oil changes at the dealership, and save the paperwork for the time you'll need the factory extended warranty work on these engines.

I hate Jiffy Lube. A few years ago my grandmother bought a brand new Buick Park Ave Ultra. I told her to have the oil changed when she hit 500 miles. She went in by herself and the guy sold her a transmission fluid service for $99. The car had 500 miles on it.

Isn't it nice...

reminds me of when I was 16 and less capable, and less educated. I used to bring my car into iffy places. The only thing stopping me then from "buying into" the extra services, was that- there wasn't enough money in my pocket- what I learned then, was that, if you want to get in and out of a quicklube place, and not have to haggle with them and explain that you don't want extra services- just tell them you have $30, and that's all the money in your exsistance, and anything else they want to do, won't get paid for. they'll stop pushing bs services on you in a hurry if they know there's no money available, lol...

Now I can happily say, that I am informed, and capable. Changing my own oil, and pretty much doing all the maintanence on my own vehicles. If I can read how to do it, have the tools, and can figure it out, I'm doing it myself and am a happier man for it, (not to mention, saving a ton of money doing it myself)..

For those who want someone else to get dirty... find a good mechanic... Often the best way to do this is ask around. Compare prices, try to get a look at the shop and see how they treat their own tools and organization...

I found a shop here in Colorado Springs.recomended to me by my stepfather.. Cooper Autimotive. It looks like a cement warehouse building off the main road aways, but this father/son operation is incredable... Their shop is always clean as a wistle, they keep the tools organized and respected very well... Last project I had them do was to reduce the oil leaking on an old 88 accord... He diagnosed the location of the leaks, called me with a quote, fixed those leaks... then found another on the oil pressure sender, fixed that and stayed under the original quote. The car didn't loose a drop after that... I'll bring cars back to him when things are above my ability without worry... He told me before he started the work, that he treats cars in his shop as if they were his own, and sounded very sincere. He proved it. and has proved it many times before with my stepfather..

So- find a shop like that, and stick with em.. being a regular customer with a good shop will also develop it's rewards.

On another note... even more reason not to go to iffy lube... I work at a papa johns that is right next to a iffy.... The guys that work there come over frequently to buy pizza and drinks and such...

They all drive lousy cars, that are falling apart... it's obvious, that none of them have any true mechanical knowhow- otherwise their cars wouldn't be running like sputtering smoking lawnmowers. I have seen them drinking out back, and then going back to the job. They are all facinated by useless subwoofers and useless mods, muffler cans, spoilers on front wheel drive cars, little dinky tires on a caddy. I wouldn't want these kinda people working on my car. Not even for something simple, like changing oil.

And that is why I like to talk my girlfriends ear off about automobiles and their MANY parts. She may not always follow me but she loves me enough to listen and you know what my constant babbling has actually helped her out in 1 situation so far.

A cousin of mine has been a mechanic for a long time now and he can give me stories all day about these "quick lube" places that just love to rip off people ESPECIALLY women. ****ers!

Oh and a jiffy lube actually offered my dad to change his light bulb. He wanted to charge him $10 for a bulb! I could'v replaced every **** bulb on the rear of his car for that much!

You know, unfortunately, this is an urban myth that continues to circulate. My brother in law actually said something similar to me when I put Pennzoil Platinum in my truck. 'Well, now you can never go back to regular oil.' So, its not just the Quick Lubes. Its the regular folks who hear this bunk and then turn around and tell someone else.

If an engine is producting sludge and you are changing the oil every 3k miles, I wonder if there is any damage being done anyhow. Producing sludge is an indication that something is not working right. It could be the PCV and smog stuff, the driving conditions, the oil or the engine design, but something is going on and maybe this is a good application for synthetic oil. I understand that as you product sludge and it gets worse that the rate of sludge production might increase, too. I just think that if you are driving a known sludge monster that synthetic oil is worth trying.

This is probably the MOST ignorant post I have read!!

Do you have ANY idea WHY they charge that price to replace that bulb?!?!? You just cann't think of the cost of the bulb, and the hourly pay rate, you have to also think about the TOTAL overhead with the shop(s)---insurance,empolyee disability insurance, lights, heat,ac,electric, water, disposables(paper towels, etc.), taxes on that hourly pay rate for the employee, and tying up that bay to replace the bulb. Now I know you'll say it doesn't take that long to replace the bulb, on some cars it doesn't, some it can take longer you never know so you just average it into that price of bulbs in general.
Don't even get me started about how women are treated. Sure some do treat them that way, but there are others that do not. You shouldn't group people/places all together into one "BAD" group.
BTW if your cousin is a "mechanic" WHY did your dad go to one of these "iffy" lubes when he should have went to your cousin?!?!?!?

Hah! finally someone!!! I used to go there and happen to be got into conversation with a guy sitting there. Actually that Jiffy lube guy was selling him transmission service every 3500 miles when he go in for an oil change on his brans new Honda accord. I really was about to explode as I found it hilarious. But than I realized that the guy was just a migrant from a third world country with no knowledge of cars.
