Syn Oil let down

Most people who are informed enough and research what oil is best for them just can't go for the maximum mileage before an oil change.
We just can't.
Full synthetics ARE good for long drain intervals, no doubt.

""I have been reading the posts on various Syn Oils and the used oil analysis and have come to the conclusion that Syn Oil is not the magic liquid I thought it was.""

You are correct whay back when they made dirt motor oils were lousy at that time when syns came out the good ones (Hatco/Amsoil) were far away better than ANY normal oil, BUT now days base stocks and more improtantly additives systems have gotten so good that a SYN is no big deal anymore about everything is a syn now days due to base oil type or the improvements that newer additive systems make so the line is very blurry now.

Assuming non-severe driving -

7.5k is reasonable for syn on a known sludger.
10k is reasonable for syn on an old engine.
12k is reasonable for syn on a fairly new engine.
15k is reasonable for syn on a clean running easy on oil engine.

All the above assume stout syn. oils - eg, Amsoil (non-XL), Mobil 1 0w40, etc.

4k is reasonable for conv. on a known sludger.
5k is reasonable for conv. on an old engine.

10k is reasonable for conv. on a clean running easy on oil engine.

All the above assume stout (pure) conv - eg YB.

Such cars will die of non-oil issues in their old age (imo).

Just a couple of comments to add.
1) I run synthetics 12+K about every 6 months. (used oil analysis documented)
2) A lot of conversation here lately also notes how much conventional oil actually contains synthetics.

I don't think people want to pay for what a really extreme cutting-edge oil formula would cost. $10/q is likely a brick wall. The Fuchs Silkolene I just looked at was $13/q, ouch. AMSoil probally offers the best quality/money. With otc synthetic oils, I better see some specs, A5 or HT-06 in my case, for the extra money (take note, Castrol).

Figure a some of the extra sin-money goes to advertising, base oil, additives, extra profit % for a premium product.
Good/Better/Best is the best way to look at it. If I did not get good otc synthetic on sale cheap, I would buy conventional oil every time. $2-3 for conventional, $3-4 for semi, $5-6 for Synthetic. Game over.

Schaeffers is under $5/qt for there 9000 line (5w30 and 5w40 full synths). I have a local dist. ctr so I don't have to pay shipping.

Per BITOG it's an excellent long drain oil (sub 15k) - I hope to put it to the test in this and upcoming OCIs.

So maybe I get too "anal" with the used oil analysis? Maybe those aren't necessarily as important as I thought overall?

A vehicle could still run a Mobil 1 Extended 15,000 mile oil change or an Amsoil 25,000 mile oil change and be O.K 95% of the time? The only issue might be wear issues or something down the road if you kept your vehicle a long time or had alot of miles racked up. (Which most people don't do. They switch out cars often)

The cab test reference was to the 60,000 mile test where they never changed the oil but filtered well. I would think the used oil analysis for those would have been concidered bad yet they did well when checked for wear, etc.

My comment on oils barely making it to the manufacturers recommended change intervals came from looking at the used oil analysis and the comments people had and the oil analysis companies had.

I guess my thoughts were basically that Syn oil was probably twice as good as Conventional oil so you should be able to go twice as long.

Roll under a car in 10 degree weather for an OC and you'll be a synoil/extended OCI convert.

Been there, done that.

No biggie. Never made me change my OCI habits.

The Valvoline Rep never mentioned used oil analysis. Somehow that got twisted around on this post. The point he was making to me was that they would not give a mileage estimate like Mobil 1 EX or Amsoil does. His point was that Synthetic Oils are better than Conventional oil. His comment was that they are not made for extended OCI's only better performance.
