Mobil 1 is at least as good as any dyno oil and it may be as good as some synthetic oils...

Agreed. In fact I would say one of the top among conventional oils.

What performance metrics are you two guys basing those opinions on? Without qualifiers, your opinion is false without any doubt. With qualifiers, you may be able to dig yourself out. People come here wanting to learn truth and they often don't get it...hence my above post about this forum being able to make people dumber.

Come now, JAG. Do you actually maintain that there are some conventional oils out there that would outperform Mobil's synthetic motor oil. I'm not a big Mobil fan, but there synthetic is obviously better than most conventional oils. Choose your metric. Start with something simple like longevity. Choose what you want, this synthetic will outperform most conventionals.

Since GM has been filling Corvettes with Mobil 1 at the factory for years, I would think you couldn't go wrong using it in a detuned version of the what WAS basically the same engine.

BOOSS, I misunderstood your post which sounded to me like you ranked it at the top among conventional oils and at the bottom of synthetics. You did not say the last part of that sentence but it sounded like that was your point. I actually thought you were saying it sarcastically for the purpose of bashing.

I remember a post by a Lexus owner (I think it was) saying he went from M1 to PP and thought it ran smoother. Indeed, it seems I've read a few posts that claim smoother engines from PP (from whatever oil they were coming from).

I think I've also seen OPPOSITE here too.

I've noticed for decades that some engines often run 'better' after an oil change when identical oil is used. I think this is a lot of what people are experiencing, thinking that the brand change is responsible when it's actually reduced friction and drag with fresh oil. I have a very hard time believing anyone has a butt-dyno sensititive enough to detect the difference between M1 and PP if the oil was fresh in both cases.

I hate to make this post for nothing. I want to try something new, but seems like I might as well just stick with what works. Mobil 1 in 5w30 flavor the the LS1. It's had it for 140,000 miles, I guess it won't hurt to keep using it. I guess... but it seems there are a lot of Mobil 1 haters on this site. There's got to be a reason. And I sure as ____ hope it isn't because of how it feels between someone's fingers...

There are not "re a lot of Mobil 1 haters on this site".

There are ppl who recognize that M1 is overpriced for what it is. A solid synth. nothing more.

It costs the same as several other brands at many places so why do people feel that way?
Mobil 1 0W-40 and Mobil 1 5W-40 come with TBN of about 12 and hold it like few other oils so I especially fail to see how they can be considered over-priced. On a miles-til-dead basis, they are underpriced.

I had a good used oil analysis in my LS1 from Mobil 1 5w-40 TrSuv, which is now Mobil 1 5w-40 TD, which is the same as Delvac1 5w-40. That used oil analysis is posted in the used oil analysis section. I now think it was too thick for my tastes, even though the LS1 has the power to overcome it in all Nebraska weather. I won't go back to such a thick oil in my ride knowing more now than I did when I was using it.

I also did a short run of Havoline DS 5w30 as an ARX rinse. Real thin stuff, comparatively. It was only in 2300 miles, but the numbers were trending well. I'd use it again if I didn't have so much other stuff stashed to use. I have a few changes of GC and got another four changes of BOGO PP (old and new versions) in 5w & 10w30.

The bloom is off the Mobil 1 rose for me

, especially since there are so many other good oils that cost the same or less. There are still a lot of Mobil 1 fans that'll steer you in that direction, but it's your choice after all.

Try some different oils and do a few used oil analysis to see what's happening.

Pennzoil Plat, Castrol Syntec, Valvoline SynPower all meet GM 4918m standards, as does Mobil 1, which is factory fill in all Corvettes. Use whatever makes you feel good and sleep well.

Nothing like argueing with secess!!! That seems a bit backwards that you would get a great used oil analysis with a 5W40 then decide it is too thick for the engine??????What type of logic is that?I could see makeing the switch if 5W40 had been a dismall failure but it obviously is not too thick if it did well before. Do not let yourself be sucked in by the thin oil crowd everything thin is not golden!used oil analysis does not lie. Run your thinner oil for the same duration as you ran the 5W40 and not as part of a rinse or other such treatment. Do a used oil analysis and let the results speak for themselfs. I ran Redline 5W40 in my 2003 Camry dureing the winter and had no problems with it even haveing to start it at -28°F to get to church. That was not includeing windchill since windchill only affects liveing tissue that was the straight temp. It was colder then that dureing the night but it had warmed up to that pipeing hot temp. by 10AM. So unless you are driveing your Corvette to church in tempatures much colder then -28°F as a matter of routine I fail to see why a thinner oil is needed especialy for some 5w30 conventional not much to gain from that over a synthetic 5W40!

If success can only be defined by UOA #'s, there are literally dozens of different oils that will work just fine in my car and I suspect there are a dozen that will do as well as any M1. If I had the $$$ and drove like a fiend I'd have the time to test them all and find out for sure. But I don't.

I'm not afraid to try different oils. I'm not chained to a particular brand. Thick oil is not my mantra. I'm a curious, thinking human being and this is what I want to do. I think I'm not alone on this site in that.

I ran 30w's in the truck and the LS1, then used TrSuv oil in both my V10 truck and the LS1, then changed back to thinner oils. I could tell the difference in thickness and both engines ran like fat, stiff little pigs - but the V10 especially and especially in the winter. The change back to thinner oils only served to reinforce my position.

Changing oils is not the end of the world.

You can call and talk to the owners, the people that formulate and blend the stuff. They do it all, in house. A couple of friends are using the stuff and my cousin is going to run a batch and get a used oil analysis. At least with this stuff you can get some straight answers about what's in the bottle. And they don't dumb down their product as they grow the company.

i checked this site out and found nothing about motor oil... only various other types of lubes. am i missing something?
