Oil for tuned LS1 Camaro

My Ls1 is stock internally, but I've had good results (but no UOA yet) on Red Line.
I used to drag race it, but now just autocross/track days and hard street driving.

What I do is change the oil once a year around New Years time with straight Red Line 5w30.
Then around the start of summer I change the filter and dump ~ a quart of the 5w30 out of the sump and add 2 Quarts of Red Line 10W-40.
This brings the 100* cSt right up to where it can handle any type of heat we will ever get in our area.

Unlike some other companies' products, Red Line's oils CAN BE mixed/blended with each other!!

As others have stated, I also use Amsoil's EaO oil filters exclusively now.

5W30 can be thicker than 10W30 when hot because it can have a higher viscosity index. But then 5W30 can shear down more. Also 10W30 can be less volatile. I prefer 10W30 because it can need less VII. But with a good synthetic all of this is generalizations and the 5w30 may actually have no more VII, not shear, and not have anymore volatility. When you have synthetic 5W40 and 0W40 that work good in high heat and shear it should be no problem for 5W30 to stay in grade.

Maybe he's confusing the fact that some of their more recent street oils (0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40) have to use some viscosity index improvers in order to cover those large ranges, whereas their older oils with less weight 'spread' were able to accomplish their ranges sans ANY VIIs??

We know for sure that Redline 5W-20, 5w30, and 10w30 don't use any viscosity index improvers.

Wow, once a year? I was yelled at on LS1tech for going 6 months even though the car was barely driven. How many miles do you put on your car yearly? Oh and I noticed you are in north Jersey, not too far from where I am. I go to school in NYC but spend my summer at my parent's house in Mahwah. Small world :)

You could be right although he was stating that they (redline) changed some oils over to PAO only. This is simply not true. Just wanted to clarify that they still use POE. Dont need that rumor flying around on here.

Well yes, but you have to remember that most of the peeps on LS1tech.com DO NOT use Red Line, or any other high POE basestock synthetic oils!
In fact a lot of them insist on high quality conventional oils, so they should NOT be going for very long OCIs in these engines.
I put ~ 8.5-10K miles on in a year, with little idling, and only some stop & go driving (even though everyone tells me that should not matter with Red Line, as it can stand up to dilution, wash down, high heat, etc. without shearing down below the weight range/specs).
The HTHS and TBN of this stuff are very good (mostly due to the basestock composition), albeit not the absolute best (some of the HDEOs/HD diesel oils are better in this area).

HDEOs tend to have a bit higher TBN, but absolutely do not compare to Redline's HTHS for a given viscosity.

I stand corrected. Thank you!!

I think Red Line 5w30 will be perfect for you though, it performs like a 40-weight in the ways that matter.
What is nice thing about Redline oil is they care enough about their customers to have an 800 number .

Thanks for the response. Makes much more sense now. I'll give Redline a call too to verify that I'm putting the correct weight into my car. I assume the thinner 5w30 would be better for my motor being freshly rebuilt and high RPM. Thanks again!

Mobil has an 800 number! But I'm betting they don't tell you much of anything and just give you vague and canned answers.

The only specific info that Dave would not divulge (and claim as 'proprietary') is the exact percentage proportion of POE to PAO in his basestocks.
He was totally transparent about everything else concerning his products!

Base oil formulation simply cannot be pinpointed of any motor oil product as it is considered to be “proprietary information” by the various manufactures here in the states.

Case in point:

However, clever marketing continues to mythicize and influence the masses when in reality the proper blend of quality base oils and additives are key to a top performing motor oil and not one given component of any such finished product... This has been echoed throughout BITOG.

That said, there are a lot of great oil choices in this thread, Red Line being but one of them.
