Mobil 1 engine noises...

Anyone else here notice Mobil 1 makes your engine noisier than it should be?

I've decided to switch to cheaper supertech oil to see if it helps quiet it down.

Motor is a 2000 Ford 4.6L SOHC V8 w/ 18,000 miles.

I've been using Mobil 1 5w30 for exactly 1.5 years and the engine is quite noisy... but my 2003 E-250 w/ a 5.4L SOHC V8 is quiet with Mobil 1 5w30 and has 17,000 miles.

I heard LS1's had noise problems with Mobil 1 and was wondering what they switched to in order to quiet it down (don't say GC 0w30 because I don't plan to drive to Canada to buy a few cases...)

IMHO, I think M1 is sometimes too thin for some applications. Now that's not too say oil is the problem, could be something loose?

I own a Ford myself, only it's a Ranger with 2.5 it's seen M1 since I got it 2 years ago and the more miles I put on it with M1, the quieter it got. It didn't start to shutup really till about 6000 miles give or take. I'm running GC-LC now and no difference really as far as noises. Maybe something a tad thicker such as Amsoil would be of a better choice. Just my $02,,,,,AR

This has been discussed a billion times. M1 is a clean and thin oil. It doesn't mask sound problems. Bc it sounds loud, doesn't mean it's not working as well.

As of the first few startups, my Hemi is louder than it was with the Mobil 1 10w30...go figure.

My Audi seems quieter with GC than with Mobil 1 0W40.

I don't buy that its just because M1 is a thin oil... If that were the case, then all Ford OHC motors that use 5W-20 would be making weird noises from the get-go, right?

Is there something in GC that isn't in M1?

I think it's just the chemical composition of the oil. Some engines are more noisy, sluggish, smooth, loud or quiet on different oils. It's really hard to say.

So far I've tried Redline, Mobil 1 10w30 and GC in my 04 Hemi and the Mobil 1 seems to be the quietest of them all on startup. Although I did change to a K&N oil filter when I filled up with the GC. Wonder if it could be the difference. I was using an OEM before.

sully, how many miles on the Hemi? I bought mine in August of this year. I have 5,200 on it.

Synthetics have different harmonics than mineral. The molecular structure is different between synthetics and mineral allowing noise to transfer more freely with synthetics.

You get your tradeoffs with everything.

I just changed my oil today with Mobil 1 5w30 Super Syn, a TRD USA oil filter, Superplug, and a FilterMag for the first time, so far it has been quiet. I have always used a Dino before this and never any magnets.This site is making me crazy.

My '03 Honda Odyssey is quieter with the 5W-20 Redline in it now than it was with 5W-30 Mobil 1. I noticed it IMMEDIATELY when I cranked it after changing the oil to check for leaks. Not a subtle difference.

I've got a Nissan 2.4 DOHC motor (KA24DE). It's been recently rebuilt and I currently have Mobil 1 5w30 in it. The motor has always been a little noisey with Mobil 1, before and after the rebuild. I'll be using some Mobil 1 0w40 on my next oil change which I'll be doing today or tomorow.

Like some other motors, this one uses oil pressure to make the timing chain tensioners exert pressure on the timing chain. Many people complain of some slight rattling coming from the timing chain, and it is possible that a heavier oil could cure some of that noise.

Mobil 1 T&S blended with my regular dose of Delvac 1300 has helped to quieten the engine in my pickup. I had noticed that it got quieter when the conventional oil was changed (aren't supposed to use synthetics for the 1st 20k miles per Cummins), so I wanted something that helped to keep it quiet longer.
