Question for those who switch around, I'm going to be switching insurance companies soon and was wondering about the refund from the old company. Would it be pro-rated proportionately by time remaining or do they do mumbo jumbo and charge fees etc to reduce what they give back? Auto paid until 4-22 and homeowners paid until 5-22.

I haven't changed insurance companies in a long time but when I did years ago they pro-rated it and send a refund. Don't remember any mumbo jumbo. They have state rules that they need to follow.

Yes. Be 100% sure that they actually cancel your policy!!

I switched insurance companies years ago and State Farm didn't cancel my policy. Even though I had the paperwork, got the refund.

6 months later I start getting collections notices, DMV sent me nastygrams saying I couldn't drive my car (which I used for work ...). Had to take an afternoon off with the policy that I *did* have and show proof of insurance to the DMV. Then had to have state farm deescalate the credit hits.

Pro-rated?! Not my experience, they'll probably calculate what it would have cost for the period.
If a 1 yr policy was $1,000 and a 6 month was $700 and you are with the 6 months you'll get back $300 and not $500, this is just an example.
Your Ins Company may be fairer or not.

Most states these days have electronic data bases where the insurance companies and DMV can see your auto insurance status. For example-if you cancel your liability the state when send you a nasty gram and pull the registration unless you get coverage. Sounds like something fell through the cracks in your example.

Yes, you will get a pro-rated refund. In most, if not all states, insurance companies are heavily regulated by State Insurance Commissions. These commissions are headed up by an Elected Official. While the insurance companies might give very generously to election campaigns, no insurance company wants an email or phone call from their dear elected official who regulates them.

If you have any difficulty, you can file a question or complaint with the commission.....

BTW, you were taught this in HS Government class....

Maybe you have seen my posts over the years in here. I change insurance companies on the fly, any time of the year I can find a better price. Doesnt matter if its for my boat, motorcycle, cars, trucks or house. Doesnt matter if the policy was just renewed two weeks earlier.
Doesnt matter if my home mortgage company just paid the home insurance for the new year out of escrow. I simply pay the new policy with my credit card, cancel the old. You will get a prorated refund check in the mail.

As far as fee's to cancel, it was never a thought on my mind until your post and I never was charged a fee of any kind but I can not say there is no such thing other then out of dozens of times I switched insurance I never was charged a fee. I mean, think about it, people would be up in arms if every time they sold a vehicle or a home if they got charged a fee. But if legal it would have to be in your insurance documents. Personally I wouldnt give it a thought.

BTW, we have been in this house, built new in 2006 for almost 16 years now, I think the longest I ever had the same home insurance company is with the present one and that has only been about 3 MAYBE 4 years. I can only guess we must have had up to five different insurance companies on the house since 2006. I dont seem to be getting the rate creep with this company as much. Others are now $450 to $700 more for the same ins I have.

Don't overpay because of scary stories, a couple hours work every year will save you boatloads of money over your lifetime, insurance companies want you to be scared or unsure switching companies but people forget you are paying them, you are their boss, dont be scared of them.
Hope this helps! Go for it!

You might think you are getting a better price, but I assure you that your rates won't even come close to mine. I get so many discounts with State Farm that my 6-month auto rates are pretty close to what many pay for 1 month of auto coverage and I'm pretty sure they aren't carrying around a $300k liability policy (required by SF due to my umbrella with them).

I have shopped around for insurance and most independent/competing agencies can't believe the low rates we pay.

My point - you don't stay with a company long enough to get guaranteed renewal, 10 year accident free, etc.

When I switched from Geico to Progressive back in 2015 I got a refund and another refund when I switched back to Geico sometime early last year I think (better coverage with half the cost.) I don't deal with a 3rd party though, I just go directly to the website to do everything I need.

I know I am getting a better price, I simply do a search at least once a year. I assume you do as well to make this statement, you do not pay less then I do.
Its kind of funny, I started on this quest 15 years ago because of the company you mentioned. State Farm.

I dont need anything from my insurance company, I dont need guaranteed renewal, I dont need phony discounts off a company generated "list price". I DO need the lowest possible price. All that other stuff is nothing but marketing for higher profit.
I pay the lowest possible cost for insurance and that is it. No fluff. I employ THEM, I pay them for service, they will give me what I want which is only lowest price and nothing more if they want my money. If not, someone always does.

We were a long time State Farm customer in NY but this was also before computers and the internet pricing. We insured everything through our local State Farm agent in NY, (great guy) both my brothers family and ours, in addition to that, we had a rather robust business policy as well, We got good rates.
I moved South, rates didnt change and I expected them to, so I started digging around on line and WOW, all that phony discounted stuff was actually that phony.
Look at it this way, for anyone familiar with Macys or any higher end store. Everything is always on sale from their regular price, which happens to be list price that no one ever pays. Insurance, same deal, unless you are checking prices on a yearly basis, you are paying to much.
As far as 300k liability, well, I dont really think that is very high but it is good. Yes, I understand you carry an umbrella and that is good.
I always carry 500k on my vehicles including boat, motorcycle and home if not offered 300k possibly on some and also the full allowed amount on Underinsured and uninsured.

I cant stress enough, unless someone is searching the internet high and low for best price you do not know how much you are paying.
www.esurance.com is a good place to add to the list for vehicles, as well as greco and progressive. esurance you may not experience price creep as much. For homes, Travelers is one to check out.
Of the companies mentioned is what worked for me for the most part, ALL areas of the country are different right down to what town as well as your credit rating and whom lives at your street address. Either way, if you just want price, search 4 to 5 companies a year. Over time you will get used to it.
