been running mobil 1 and PP for the last 10,000 miles on my 02 altima. ive decided since i change it every 3,000 miles, im just wasting my money, so im thinking of switching to MC semi syn 5W30. deos it even make sense to switch to this oil even though ive had great results with mobil 1 and PP? im just comfortable with 3,000 mile oci's in this car and i dont want to keep wasting money on synthetic when i can get semi syn fo cheaper. how is MC in terms of protection, quality etc. and whats the most likely oci that MC semi syn can go?

Mobil 1 10000 mi no prob....MC 5w20at 5000 to 8000.... no problem
MC 5W20 SB is speced for 10,000 mile changes in my 2011 Mustang 5.0. I would assume the 5W30 would be similar. I dont foresee any problem with your usual 3,000 mile changes. Although I suspect pretty much any of the new SN/GF5 Name Brand 5W30 conventional would do just as well.
Its kind of like 15W40 HDEO. In 25,000+ Mile Test in my 3406E the only way you could tell Mobil Delvac 1300, Shell Rotella T and Chevron Delo apart was by the additive package. Oxidation, Nitration, TBN, TAN, Soot, Insolubles and Wear Metals were all so close as to make any difference meaningless. Not to mention they all were no where close to the condemnation limits for changing. Modern lubricants are way more capable than most will ever know.

should i be able to do 5,000 mile oci's without a used oil analysis? i know oil color has nothing to do with the oil being good or not, but its been 1500 miles since i last changed my oil and the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 i put in is very dark now. also, i have a misfire every once ina while, and my coolant overflow bottle is often low, leading me to think its a blown head gasket, but the car runs fine. thats why i do 3,000 miles on PP instead of 5,000. but ill push it to 4,500 this time before i change it and send it off for analysis.

I think that's amazing that Ford specs your car for 10k intervals on semi-syn! Is that a regular or severe service interval? (was guessing regular)

Fix those issues, analyze to see if there's coolant in the oil, and then extend away.
The coolant leaks could be as simple as a leaky O-ring/hose on a fitting. It might be worth your while to do a pressure test, or get some UV dye and a blacklight to trace the coolant leak.

At 14 bucks for 5 quarts for MC 5w20 Blend it seems crazy to push it to 10K miles..It is cheap enough to change out every 5-6k miles.

My 95 Ford (which I wouldn't classify as a newer car) sometimes saw 10K OCI over the years (my goal was 5K but life got a little busy at times) and the oil came out looking darker brown, but definitely NOT black. It currently has over 200K miles on it and still runs very good and uses about 1/4 of a quart of oil in about 5K miles.

For your 3K changes, go with the MC. It's very good and will save $.
