Hi,

Just for kicks, I decided to try Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in
my 2005 Hyundai Elantra with 44,000 miles. I recorded absolutely
NO difference in mileage and engine smoothness, after 6000 miles.(My Elantra is
in MINT condition and has ALWAYS ran super smooth.

So, im assuming I can switch back to using Motorcraft Syn Blend
5w30 and go back to doing 5000 miles changes with the OEM filter
without any issues at all??

If I continue to do 5000 OCI's with MC and the OEM filter, will I
be able to get 175,000 out of the engine?

So, I am wondering exactly how much more protection my engine
really was getting with the Pennzoil Platinum?

Yes.

Perhaps, but any failure to do so will not be the fault of your oil/filter selection.

Minor differences...none of which are engine-life threatening.

The MC SS prob has more synthetic base stock than the PP. Why couldnt you change? N.American 'synthetics' are typ made from mineral oil not PAG or Castor bean oil or coconut Diester. The synthetic and the conventional (neither term is accurate) meet the GF4 or GF5 spec required by your Hyundai. If you want to try a "real" synthetic you may wish to try the appropriate Amsoil or Motul 300V or Redline or Silkolene or Pentosin or myriad high spec longlife euro oils. Not saying they are better lubricants for a 5K OCI but they are synthetic.

Longer OCI aside, synthetic oil will give you 2 things over dino: better protection at cold start in cold weather, and better protection from extreme heat.

Any difference you detect during normal operation between dino, blend or synthetic is placebo. That said, if you are looking to get 175,000 miles plus, I'd go (and did) to synthetic. With regular maintenance I see no reason why the Hyundai can't go 175,000 or more. I'm in the same boat, and am more concerned about the longevity of the transmission vs. the engine.

Also, using synthetic oil is no guarantee of longevity, I had a VW Corrado SLC that I bought new, that had Mobil 1 from 1500 miles. I sold that car at 90,000 miles- nothing but trouble from 60,000 miles on. I also had 2 different BMW 3 Series using unknown oil up to 100,000 miles when I bought them. I used BMW approved synthetics when I got them. I sold the first one at 250,000 miles and the second one at 194,000.

HyundaiGuy,

Thanks, and you are correct! We also have to be sure to
maintain our auto transmissions in the Hyundai's. I have
switched to Amsoil ATF at 29,000 miles, and at 44500 miles
the transmission shifts super smooth.

That engine has no special needs and is not stressed.
The MC is one of the best choices.
I have trouble finding it in 5-30 jugs. 5-20 is common, though.

I have miminal brand loyalty lol.
Over several hundred thousand miles on several vehicles that don't have specific operating criteria, I've switched back and forth many times not just between these oils but couple of others as well. No big deal at all, no issues.
I will also say that with the Accord and the Equinox, I use PP almost exclusively, my thought is to keep the Honda VCM system as clean as possible and for Dexos approval for the Equinox.
