supertech walmart filter help

I stopped in Wal-Martlastnight and checked a few of the non Ecore Super Tech filters.

The one 7317 on the shelf did not have the holes punched through(slits opened).

Two of another number next to the 7317, one "OK" one no holes punched through.

6607(?)several, holes variable, punched through on one side, not the other. Not enough area to pass all the oil.

This doesn't appear to be an isolated incident of a filter slipping past QA. It's country wide, across multiple filter numbers. That says to me that no QA is being done at all.

The consequence of no holes is that filter would be passing all of the oil through the by-pass all the time. I wonder how many thousands of cars are running around out there with no oil filtration all for the want of spending less than a dollar more on a decent filter?

Yes, this is troubling. I would really like to see a picture.

You can post the image by uploading it to Picasa or another web album place and put the link here. If you'd like, you can e-mail me the photo and I can upload it to my account. I just really want to see this! May have to make a special trip tonight just to see the filters here!

You gotta put it on Photobucket or somewhere like that, and link to it.

see those slits they are sealed shut on both sides i chcked different angles with and without light

That's not good at all. Looks like the machine that produces the holes in the center core didn't open them up enough. If so, that could mean major flow restriction and the bypass valve would probably always be open on that filter.

Exactly why I spend a couple more bucks to get a good filter, and I ALWAYS inspect the filter in the store before purchase ... no matter what the brand is.

i wanna see if other size filter have that issue. the one for my car does not. i spent a half hour trying to find a hole in those notches thinking there was no way theyd mess up something that big.

Quality control failed. Not good. Sounds like multiple.
Well, you can buy it and send it to the manufacture, and they send you a bunch of 'good ones', go for it.

That photo is scary.

Man, now everyone here has me wanting to run to WalMart and look at the Super Tech filters. I think AutoZone Valuecraft filters are Super Tech clones too? I wonder if they are having QC issues too?

I was about to call shenanigans until I saw that pic. Now it makes me want to check all the Champ clones in my stash and remove the two I currently have on my cars. Yikes.

As the following pics show, the openings favor/open toward the bypass side! Held an led light to the media side of a cut open ST7317. Couldn't believe Champ would have a mass QC failure. More pics to follow on a separate thread with pics and media area specs. fwiw, I'd use the ST 7317 before an orange can, even at the same price point. But @ $2.84 the ST is ~$1.70 less expensive for same app.

Thanks. Saved me a trip. Break out the dental mirrors while in the oil filter section. Punch holes facing the 'other way' so you can't see them.
