SUPERTECH synthetic users, thoughts?

if it says WPP on bottom of jug its made by Warren, as the supertech is here. which is basically the same as aap, az & others house brand. I've used before with no problems.
however, I just bought 2 jugs of PP at Kmart on sale for $24.49 & used at coupon had for 15% off on purchase over $100, as bought other stuff needed. so actually only paid $20.82 about. so I feel there are many better deals to be had, although I haven't seen the $1 & $3 quarts everyone talking about. but if don't want to shop around ST is easy way to save $ and won't hurt, I'd even go to 5k miles for warentlqtrwow

ST oil has been around long enough that if its quality was poor or inconsistent, I would think the esteemed folks here at BITOG would know it.

If you search the used oil analysis forum, you won't find a bad used oil analysis of ST.
This is an oil some people love to hate, but it seems to perform just fine in service.
You can buy name brand oils for a few more dollars, though.
Whether these would actually perform better on the short drains you intend to do is an unknown, but I wouldn't bet on it.
I've hardly ever bought ST, but that's because I have a stash of oil acquired at much lower cost.

Thanks for the chart.

From my use of SuperTech full synthetic functionally it is fully a good as any motor oils on the chart. After getting some diesels on the place we moved to Rotella T6 5W-40 to insure when topping off any engine the wrong type oil would not be used.

Where you trade every 30K or 300K miles this SuperTech synthetic will do anything the other listed oils will do for the protection of your engines as long as it meets the min manual stated specs.

I think we all agree today any major used synthetic motor oil meeting min OEM requirements is as good as it gets.

What motor oil to use today is an Emotional decision then we come to BITOG and try to use Logic to support our Emotional decisions.

About the only think to discuss about motor oil today are additives like Liqui Moly, Archoil, etc since most all major consumed motor oils meeting the same specs are functionally the same.

My question is this: if you had a choice of Pennzoil Conventional or warren Super Tech synthetic, or MAG1synthetic, all at approximately the same price, which would be preferred. Non of which would be run more than 5000 miles OCI

That's the trouble with having a stash. lol

I am surprised people are saying only to run it 5000 miles. I would think maybe 6-7500 at least. As far as choosing an oil for my Jeep, I would have to see a used oil analysis on all 3 oils to make my choice. I'm only running Pennzoil conventional because I saw proof of how nicely it wore in my engine.

I am still skeptical on running a synthetic at the moment because M1 made my Jeep tick like a bomb so I guess that's whats holding me back.

dlundblad the SuperTech Synthetic is good to the 7500 mile mark I expect but not in all cases.

Mobil 1 states to change oil every 3-5K miles I think (know 5K miles is max run time) when coming from a non synthetic for the first few oil changes after moving to their High Mileage synthetic line of motor oil.

As you noticed when M1 started cleaning out your Jeep engine it can dirty up the motor oil in just a few hundred miles so short (OCI's) Oil Change Intervals is the correct way to go.

We have engines from the 70's up that we have moved to synthetic without issues EXCEPT for the first few changes at 200 miles the oil can look like it is at 10K miles.

A lot to the old stuff is easy to change out the oil filter so we do that to clear the new oil back up for a while. Since it does clear up for a while I guess the new filter and topped off oil does help. At $5-$10 for a filter it seems like a good move to me but we may just be wasting oil and filters.

Too sketchy for me. If Walmart has anything to do with it they are going for the lowest price, we see reports of different suppliers in different parts of the country.

In Canada i believe someone posted it was recycled oil. The point is this is not a "brand name" so it has nothing to protect, you have no idea if Walmart changes their supplier tomorrow and again the next week for your area.

Ditto all the house brands. For a couple of bucks more i would go with PP, Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Mobil 1 with these you have a much better chance at consistent quality.

Your entitled to your opinion but try to base it on some facts.

You would be hard pressed to find a instance of a grenaded engine due to Supertech Synthetic that was properly spec'd and used for that engine.

To many times around here, people get their "Wal-Mart is the devil" bias in front of the fact that their Supertech Branded oil has never shown to be a out of spec oil regardless of supplier or caused any harm when properly applied.

I don't have a turbo car, but I have used Super Tech 10w30 synthetic in my supercharged corvette. I change the oil at 5000 mile OCI. I make wot runs all the time. I have bounced the tach off the rev limiter too. Zero problems. I recommend Super Tech synthetic oil, u will be fine. I do hear that the turbo cars like rotella

I think it really depends on the car. Could you toss it into a Cruze LS (non turbo), Civic, or Corolla? Sure could....In A more advanced engine, like a Focus (DI), Traverse (DI), or something higher tech? You might want to go with the name brand..unless it is certed....like Dexos, for example...

ST for the most part will be warren, Mobil, or Sopus in rare cases. Syn is strictly Warren. Walmart was going to change to Citgo, but it looks like Warren got the long term contract here....and they have been supplying for a while now...

Trav is somewhat right, but it pays to do your research......I know that I could could use either ST (warren), Meijer (citgo), or Advance's (Warren) Synthetics in my older engines without blinking....whether from used oil analysis, or personal use....

And unless you are on the PQIA's poop list, I can't see anyone putting a sub par product out there.....

It was like 7 years ago when I used Super Tech synthetic. It was much cheaper than major brands back then and not too much over dino price.

With majors going for $4 or $5 a quart it gives them an edge. Rotella T6 5W-40 being good for both our gas and diesel engines makes it attractive. M1 is well priced if at WM.

And that information is still current, Trav. They did, however, bring in a synthetic version up here, too. I don't know if that's the same supplier. In any case, I wouldn't have much issue using it. If a person wants Safety-Kleen oil in Canada, Walmart is about the only way to get it. They provide Walmart with a pretty big range of products, including agricultural/industrial stuff, and all in big pails, too, so that's kind of nice.

Cannot use T6. Owners Manual only spcifies 5w or 10w30, and T5 10w30 is a blend, which im sure would be fine as well. But at $16 for the gallon and $4 for that extra qt (it takes 5qts), I'd be paying more for the blend than a synthetic which has proven itself with many BITOG members at much longer oci than I intend.

Hyundai's recommendation for its d.i. turbo's is much less stringent than those you mention (SM / GF-4 [no mention of blend or syn]). What they are strict about is oil change intervals, 3k severe or 5k normal.

Thats is my point. The uncertainty of the product and the fact the brand names are sold in the US at fire sale prices anyway makes ST very unappealing to me as does any "house brand".
I may use it in an old junk if i was broke and turning every penny over twice before spending it.

I see posters saying things like "it meets the spec". Well a doctor who is last in his class but passed is still called doctor but i wouldn't want to go to him if you follow my reasoning.
The recycled stuff stuff meets spec also but no way in Hades am i putting that in my engine.
I stated my opinion and some don't like it but i could care less. Its their car and their money, it makes no difference to me.

If someone can post a link to the ST PDS i would like to read it, not warren or safety clean as we don't know if they didn't change the formula just for Walmart.

No, your opinion makes sense and I for one respect it's logic. But the other side of the coin is that pqia has posted the numbers and I respect pqia. BITOG members have posted uoa and shown ST to be much more than just competent as well. Is it on par with PP, M1, Edge w/ti? No. But does it need to be for sub 5k mile oci? No as well. Heck, even using name brands doesn't always guarantee quality, ask Nextgen.

I would be willing to bet that Nextgen is getting a closer look by Ashlands QC.
If ST came up will bad numbers would Walmart even respond or put it on on Warren or whomever or just let it blow over and not even bother to remove it from the shelf?

When i buy something i buy many times on the companies credibility and how much faith i have in them to produce a quality product.
We all do, does anyone really know what is in a bottle of Ketchup by looking at it?

Walmart is not a company i trust and with good reason.
Stuff like this says a lot about the company and its policies.

http://consumerist.com/2007/03/21/recalled-pet-food-still-on-walmart-shelves/

http://www.fastcompany.com/54763/man-who-said-no-wal-mart

Warren may be a fine company but when you buy from Walmart you are not buying just from Warren (their name isn't even on the label) you are buying from Walmart.

Wait a minute. Walmart is less trustworthy than the oil conglomerates?? I could find countless links condemning them too. We all have our beliefs I guess, and you're entitled to yours. No harm no foul.

Another typical Supertech thread. A lot of "emotions' and "feelings" about Wal-Mart but very little facts given by them about the oil to backup their misgivings, just that they do not trust or like the retailer.
