I bought a couple of these given their 20k rating. I change oil religiously every 5k. The reason I bought this is to see if I could change the oil filter every other oil change (10k total miles) as I have a suction pump for the oil, and it saves me the hassle of removing the skid plate and all that mess.

The filter itself seems to be of excellent quality and is expensive at $11.00 each. However, when I tried to insert it into a spare OEM Toyota cartridge I had, it was loose going inside the tube/stem. Tried it with the Toyota filter and it was a snug fit.

Though I am not afraid that the looseness will cause it to collapse or anything as it seems reinforced on the inside, I am still wondering if I should use it or return it and hope the Toyota Denso filters will last 10k.

Any thoughts?

Are you asking for thoughts on using an oil filter for two OCI? Or do you have a specific problem with this one filter?
Both. I will post some pics shortly. I believe we should change the oil filter at every oil change. But I hurt my right hand recently and it's hard to do any mechanical work to raise the vehicle and get the skid plate etc. So, I thought I could use the oil suction pump and do the oil filter change every other time.

Plus, I can't raise the vehicle on ramps inside the garage as the garage opener might hit the roof of the car. I could do it in the driveway, but our HOA has banned all vehicle repairs in public view!

As for using this filter, since its wobbly, I am afraid it won't be centered when I screw in the oil filter, and I might end up tightening the cartridge with the filter tilted. The OEM filter on the other hand is snug and I can be assured it is going straight in.Unless there is some sort of guide in the oil filter receptacle that will straighten it out no matter what. Not sure about that one.

If it was me, I’d just get an OEM filter and use it for two 5K/6 month OCIs. These 5th gen 4Runners only call for an oil change every 10k/12 months anyways. If you don’t change the filter, it will take 6.0 quarts (vs 6.6 qts with a filter change) to change the oil in a 5th gen V6 4Runner.

IIRC when I looked up information for neighbors 4Runner they recommend oil at 5k and filter at 10k so shouldn't be an issue. The Toyota filter was less than $5 from parts counter.

The MityVac should be fine for what you want to do.

All I read about HOA's makes me never want to go to one.

Get a custom temporary "blind" that looks just like the front of your house to put on driveway so you can work behind it. The one guy painted a boat on his after he was told there had to be fence to hide it. https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/1cngvgx/a_boat_owner_received_a_letter_from_the_city/

As for using an oil filter for multiple OCI there are quite a few existing threads on that subject. I'll list a few below. Filters are rated in miles and they don't know if you've changed the oil or not.

I'll leave the looseness issue to others but as long as the ends make contact with the tube I would not be worried.

Hahaha... Good one.

5th Gen 4Runner calls for 5k Oil changes and I do them at those intervals.

Thanks for the links. I did search the threads for this particular filter and 4runner before I opened a thread. But I will check out those links. I guess I will have to get some jack stands and try to do it in my garage once my hand heals. And I have decided to just return the filters and stick with OEM and do it the hard way. I wish Toyota had an opening on the skid plate to remove the oil filter, it's such a pain. Might upgrade to a TRD Pro skid plate which I think has that oil filter opening that way I don't even have to jack up the vehicle.

To answer your question, I haven't changed the oil yet. Still have around 750 miles left for a change.

Only in severe service. I maintain that if it was mine, I’d change the oil and filter and then change the filter every other time. I used my oil extractor on our 2016 the last time I changed it and then pulled the drain plug, the extractor took 14 minutes to pull the oil out and left 3 to 4 oz of oil in the pan. It works well enough and gets out enough oil to be adequate, but I’ll probably just pull the plug on ours most of the time. I have a lift and I like to grease the driveshafts and rotate the tires at every oil change anyways. I just tried the extractor to satisfy my own curiosity.

You have a lift? Thats been a dream of mine. Didn't realize 5k oil changes are not mandatory. I thought my manual said that. I will double check. My driving is mundane highway driving to and from work and local shopping, that's it. Thanks for the info.

The above OEM filter has 11k miles on it and 2 oil changes. I’ve done several 10k plus runs on an oem filter (several times on a single oil change) and they always look fine coming out. As long as your engine is well maintained and clean I’d have no issue doing two 5k/6 month oil changes on one filter, or a 10k/12 month interval if you’re doing a lot of highway driving. Like I said, the suggested interval is 10k/12 months unless you operate under severe service conditions. It sounds to me like you would be well served by an OEM filter and some Mobil 1 EP, changed on an annual basis. If you choose to pull the plug and drain the oil at 5K/6 months, I’d leave the filter in for a second run. There are 2 bolts that hold on a small plate below the oil pan, you can pull the small plate off and drain the oil and refill the engine with 6 quarts in 10-15 minutes and be on your way.

Why the 4 Runner then?

Why the 4 Runner then?
My old 2007 had filter on the top and was easy. Didn't realize or think about the 5th gen 4Runner and its oil changing procedures when I bought one. Most importantly I needed reliability and body on frame vehicle for ride comfort even if I am not off-roading. Roads around here in the country can qualify as semi off-roading.

You know I feel stupid. This whole thing started because I was under the impression that the recommended oil changes are at 5k.I have conditioned myself to do it at 5k and assumed the manual stated the same. Now I realize it is indeed 10k. Which means the OEM filter will last for 10k and I didn't have to go looking for a special filter that will last long.

Thanks.

It’s fine to keep changing at 5k, more oil changes are better than less. But with the filter being the pain that it is on these, I’d change the filter every other time if you choose to keep changing the oil at 5k/6 months. I’ve dumped the oil and refilled the engine with 6 quarts and left the filter on a lot of times when I was getting ready to leave on a long trip in the 4Runner. I think having fresh oil in the sump the main thing. Most contaminants are held in suspension in the oil, if you have a clean and well maintained engine that doesn’t have a mechanical issue, there shouldn’t be a lot for the filter to catch.

Yes, the engine is clean and has had regular 5k oil changes + filter. Also have a magnetic drain plug installed last time. Will know if it picked anything up when I do the oil change this time.

Again, your original post about mundane highway driving to and from work and local shopping I thought wouldn't necessitate a 4Runner. Gas mileage must be pretty bad especially when a Corolla or Camry would give better more comfort and be easier on the gas budget.

I also use it to haul stuff like bags of mulch or fertilizer for my yard and big stuff which won't fit in a car. So it's utilitarian use was also a factor. But I am thinking of a Subaru Forester which can do the same and be easy on the gas.

Forgot to say I used to drive a VW Passat. Had a back surgery and I need something high to get in and out.

Thanks for this sir, now I get it. Cheers...
