Amsoil Filter Options for a 99 Toyota 4runner V6

Hello
I know that Amsoil took off there EA line of oil filters for Toyota's but I have read in a couple of places that people are using a bigger one that Amsoil still offers. I have a 99 Toyota 4Runner V6 3.4
I think the filter that I am able to use is the Ea034. Can anyone confirm that this will work on my vehicle?

The gasket and can diameter are correct. It is a longer filter. You should do well with it.

I have a 2000 tundra 4.7l V-8, I too had recieved the letter from amsoil stating to use a differant filter. Mine had been on for 12k no problems. I called amsoil to see what the problem is, they basically told me the samething the letter stated. My question is what is the real problem??? If your filter plugs it should bypass, no differant than cold oil. Is there Bypass to small is that why they are starving for oil? I would like to use there filters again as I like there products. Any light you can shed would be great.
 
I don't have any exclusive inside info, if that's what you mean.

The real problem is the level/amount of combustion byproducts that Toyota/Lexus engines can produce. I'm sure that the actual number of units involved is relatively small, but formed a frequency of incidence that required attention and corrective action.

It's hard to say about the bypass valve. It's obvious that the 8-11 differential pressure that it ranges in is not uncommon, but I don't think any filter's bypass valve is designed to handle the full flow of the engine ..or I should say filter. Take a look at Wix's modular bypass valve (it's somewhere here on one of the dissection threads.

So, while it may open @ 8-11 psi, it really doesn't look to be designed to handle the full oil output of the engine. With a totally plugged media, this could setup the scenario in question.

I don't think this occurs in all but extreme cases, but does tend to contour the problematic engines that don't just impact Amsoil. The part we haven't settled on (realized, accepted) is that your engine/situation may not have that issue, nor would your service profile, but since it shared a part number with an engine that does, that filter went away.

They're working on a redesign. No telling when it will show up.
 
Gary do you think the WIX 51516 Oil Filter would be a good substitute for the 1997 -1999 Toyota 4Runner V6?

The suggested filter for this application is the 51348 which is about 4 inches shorter in length. Maybe the longer 51516 might be able to handle the oil flow better?

I think the 51348 is 1.4" shorter ..but no matter. The 51516 is close enough to 50% longer to loosely describe it as such.

It should work for 15k or so if the 15k or so is done in a short enough span of time ..like a year. Beyond that I'd probably swap it out.

Again, flow should never normally be an issue with any filter. The instances that caused Amsoil to pull the filters were surely exceptional and just too high a frequency to endure as a small company. The same situation probably befalls any/all filters, but amy/all filters aren't marketed for 25k/one year. Amsoil can't manage that over the broad span of usage profiles without a few too many slipping through the cracks and costing them money.
 
Thank you Gary for your speedy and insightful reply. Looks lite the Fram XG 3600 or the WIX 51516 will do for now.

Looks like the same scenario applies to the Fram Extended Guard Filter. The Toyota Specs for the Fram XG call for filter XG 3614 but the dimensions and gaskets for the larger XG 3600 are in the same ballpark as the WIX 51516.

After a while, the fog around oil filters dissipates and you figure out that it's a given thread, a given can diameter ..and a gasket size. They'll then fall into lengths. The gasket differences, if any, aren't usually an issue.

I've always wondered how much flow a filter's bypass valve could actually flow if the media was completely blocked. I wonder if the filter manufactures take that scenario into account when they design the bypass valve? ... I would hope so, but wouldn't count on it 100%.

If the flow area of the bypass valve isn't close to the flow area of the filter's center mount hole, then I'd suspect it would have flow problems if the media was really clogged up.
 
I have a 2003 Toyota Sienna with the 1MZFE 3.0L motor.
My former vehicle ('96 windstar) used the WIX 51516....and I decided to compare the 2 on the WIX website.
I am on my 2nd OIL change......using the longer filter.
First I ran the WIX 51516......right now I have the longer version Pure 1.
The FRAM called for is the 3614......and the longer version is the 3600....although the FRAM that I would use is the XG3600.

I plan to continue to use the longer filter.....specs are IDENTICAL between shorter and longer filter except for length.
There is plenty of room for it..

With identical media......more surface area......and more capacity (dirt holding capacity).
 
I experienced a plugged Amsoil filter on a GM 3.4 liter engine and had already put an upsized EaO23 on when an EaO29 was called for. IIRC, the lady's engine had about 12k or 13k miles on the oil and filter. I knew there was zero flow through the media when the filter can was still stone cold after the engine had idled for about 15 minutes. (The oil pan, etc. was hot to the touch by then.) The engine did not sound right while idling for those 15 minutes, but the strange noise went away after the oil change, thankfully. I believe it was the oil filter bypass (in the engine on this one) causing this noise somehow. I went back with Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 and the longer M1-201 oil filter.


This problem can surface if the engine sees a lot of duty in warm-up mode, such as frequent short trips. I believe the potential for this problem worsens with a super efficient oil filter such as the EaO, combined with this type of severe duty (short trips often). So while upsizing the filter will add some additional surface area for filtering, one still needs to consider the type of service when deciding how long to keep these filters and oil in service. The shorter the trips overall, the more often the oil and filter should be changed. In her case, that Amsoil oil and filter should have been changed by 8000 miles or so instead of 12 or 13k miles/1 year.

It's a YMMV situation. Lots of variables with how the oil pumps are setup in terms of pressure limits and volumes. Someone ..somewhere..is going to have the wrong combination.

This sounds like a case where the bypass valve can not flow nearly enough oil to keep an engine happy if the filter is totally clogged. If a filter's bypass valve is undersized, the pump will quickly boost pressure up to it's relief pressure setting (due to the huge resistance to flow), and the bypass valve will basically act like a choking orifice if sized too small. Any oil the filter bypass can't flow, the pump will relief back to the sump.

I doubt the manufactures ever really consider a fully clogged filter scenario, therefore I'd suspect that almost all bypass valves are undersized to take full pump flow if the filter clogs completely.
