I thought I would start the New Year off right by wasting some time thinking about my engine oil filter. I currently use a Honda OEM oil filter made by Mahle Tennex in Japan, and I am wondering if I should switch to an Amsoil Oil Filter.

Does anyone have a data sheet for the Honda OEM Mahle Tennex Oil Filter, Part Number 15400-RTA-003. It's probably out there on the Internet somewhere, but my Internet search skills are completely lame.

On the subject of Mahle Tennex vs. Amsoil, I welcome any and all comments. :)

Happy New Year. :)

What would the Amsoil filter, or any other aftermarket product do that the OE/OEM would not?

Maybe I am getting old and cynical, but given the everchanging landscape of what entities own what brands, I have mostly gone to OE/OEM from legitimate suppliers for everything in the fleet. Choose OE and you are assured of a product that meets an OE standard and was subject to some measures of QC along the line. Choose OEM and you are relying on a Tier 1 supplier's quality controls. Beyond that??

Mahle is a reputable supplier and that or actual OE is what I would use.

That's what I'm trying to find out.

I always use OEM oil filters for that very reason.

OEMs use different suppliers at different times. Some are better than others, and that is sometimes the reason why OEMs change suppliers. Right now, Honda is contracting with Mahle Tennex in Japan to supply their oil filters. As far as I know.

I wouldn't call it old and cynical. I also have reverted back to OEM filters VS aftermarket, unless it's an event where I cannot get OEM and have to get aftermarket (you know, the "I knew I had another filter in my stash" moment). Anymore, the aftermarket is becoming a crapshoot on what you get.

The current problem with the Amsoil filter isn't lack of due diligence by Amsoil, it's totally a result of the Best Brands bankruptcy debacle. The filter, (in my case the EA15K13) is manufactured to spec by Champion Labs which is a Best Brands company. The C&P have revealed problems, not only with quality control but more importantly, consistency. Most of us looking for proper specs, quality and consistency have had trusted brands literally disintegrate as we watch, it is discouraging that we have to constantly check, test and examine to get a quality product. I, like many others here, would prefer a US made product, but, based, again, on information here on BITOG, im going to try the Mobil 1 M1-110A which is now sourced by Warren? In Vietnam. There are several filter manufacturers here in the US that are capable of building a spec filter for Amsoil, I just wish they would move definitely to restore confidence. Interestingly, when I called Amsoil about the filter problems, they did acknowledge the issues and told me to shake the filter before use and if it rattled, don't use it. I'm using and liking their Signature oils, but they're going to have to do better than that if they want to sell me filters for my Honda.

The Mobil 1 filter is well made. I have the 103A installed on my engine. Will give feedback when I change it in April. Will be going to the Microgard Select filter next.

I am trying to understand this exercise: You trust a Honda-built vehicle, but not the choice of oil filter manufacturer?

Fair question.

I trust Honda-built vehicles and OEM parts. That said, if there is something even better, I want to know about it.

Example: Supposing the Honda OEM oil filter is the best oil filter at that price point, but there are better ones at a higher cost? OEMs have to balance quality with cost. I do not.

I mean Mahle is one of the biggest filter manufacturers. I personally in my BMW strictly use Mahle, MANN and Hengst.
On Honda, I just get OE at dealership since it is $6. Who makes it? I don’t care. It is OE by reputable manufacturer.

You see? Right there, I'm learning something. I've never heard of MANN and Hengst, and I know little about Mahle.

Thank you. :)

The US made Honda OEM filter is made by Fram/First Brands.

I don't remember ever seeing Fram/First Brands OEM Honda oil filters. I have used Honeywell-made OEM oil filters, which were made in the U.S., and Filtech-made OEM oil filters, which I think were made in Canada. Now, I'm using Mahle Tennex OEM oil filters, made in Japan.
