I was at Walmart the other day to get some Dexron VI for my Saturn. The bottle on the shelf was labeled Dexron VI/Mercon LV. I have always used supertech atf in the past but I was scared off because I wasn’t sure if a single fluid could be licensed by both Ford and GM. The bottle says the fluid is recommended in a GM application, but I want to know that what I’m using is licensed by GM. I have always thought if it says Dexron VI on the bottle, then it is liscended by GM. Thoughts?

I have used this in a Dex VI trans … Ford and GM have co-V transmission plants and this is becoming more common …
Think Valvoline has another …

Did you look for the license number on the bottle? Sometimes printed in small print right there near the top. If its there, then its a licensed product.

Really? Interesting, where do you find a slipperiness value to compare them?

FWIW it works fine in my old BMW which specs dexron III.

If it is a Saturn calling for ATF Dex III/Mercon....I'd go with the Super Tech Mercon V which is approved by Ford.

It is a 2009 Saturn Aura. I thought the spec of Dexron VI. I should clarify my original question. Can a single fluid be licensed by both Ford and GM? This seems counterintuitive to me.

They usually say "Officially Licensed & GM-Approved DEXRON*-VI Fluid" and something like: "recommended" or "suitable" or "meets or exceeds requirements" for Mercon LV.

GM in fact does not support Dexron III anymore. I believe the license expired in 2016 and was not renewed. GM even warns to stay away from any Dex III fluid. It is not licensed and therefore it's content is suspect. Dex VI is completely backwards compatible with any prior Dexron spec.
