Supertech and other value point oils

You do you! I’m glad you keep the oil in tip top shape over the OCI, but I simply can’t imagine changing my oil THAT often. I enjoy doing maintenance on my vehicles, but I enjoy using them just a bit more. There are guys that change oil on their Harleys every 2-3k…it’s a messy ordeal and I couldn’t fathom changing my oil every month! However, most of those guys are lame bar hoppers who ride the same 1-5 miles every bike night to pose and drink. 🤷🏻‍♂️ So an oil change every 2-3k means once a year for them.

How many miles are you running the oil in your Harley? Sounds like big miles between changes. Ha ha...You do you! As Lake Jr always says, usage dictates chemistry (or something to that effect). You best run that expensive botique oil.

I ran it for 20,000mi last run. Changed filter at 10k. It was the first full after draining the factory fill, so I still had break in contaminants in the samples. I drained it and plan to run it for 30,000mi this go around. I’m using HPL V-Twin oil. I still have to change my primary oil every 5k due to contaminant ingestion by the primary breather tube (solves a transfer problem from the transmission to primary, but introduces filth).

I don't understand why people begrudge others for the choices they make, Each of us make choices for many reasons, some that seem totally illogical to others, but makes perfect sense to the person making the choice. God knows I've made poor choices in my life (all my exes live in Texas), but it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

This forum is a wonderful place to share experiences which have shaped their views on subjects, but please accept that others aren't necessarily "wrong", just have had different experiences, thus opinions.

And on the subject of opinions, I think it's great so many people come, and often stay, here looking for expert advice on how to better take care of their cars and many other subjects. That's how I ended up here only a couple of months ago. Yes, I/we do sometimes open a new thread on subjects which has been hashed and rehashed many times over the incredible lifetime of this forum, but maybe someone was unable to figure out the best syntax to use in the Search function, or they landed on a thread having 20 pages with a lot of back-and-forth to the point they were suffering from analysis paralysis.

I very much appreciate the willingness of others to share their experiences with the goal of helping others not having to learn from their mistakes. Know that sometimes one person's mistakes can be the opportunity of a lifetime to someone else. Thank you.

Lake video shows better data than my or anyone descriptions or rambles here. So far, I have a few samples:
1. Altima 02, burns oil with any oil whatever brands from German castrol time, Mobil1 0w-40, 5w-30 Valvoline, Pennzoil, etc. The burning rate is still more less the same. Car survives until 130k miles before I sold it. The catalytic died at 70k miles, replaced under federal law. New formulation ILSAC5 or newer helped catalytic converter wear after 2008.
2. Sienna 04, no oil consumption 230k miles. Always use cheapest oil on sale (supertech, napa, etc.)
3. Prius 06, consume oil 0.2L/5k miles since it was new, sold at 240k miles. Use only cheapest group III oil too.
4. Corolla hybrid 2015, consume no oil with cheap Mannol 7918/7922 0w20, ~€3-4 per L. I did 5-8k OCI, still pretty new 116k miles.

The samples are strongly dependent on make and model more within 5-10k OCI than brands of oil. I don't do >10k miles in gasoline cars.

Smell means nothing on brand new oil, manufacturers use different additives and different amounts of additives/friction modifiers that result in different smells, your nose cannot tell you how refined an oil is.

Supertech has been a solid oil for a very long time, millions of people use it without problem and there is plenty of examples of Supertech doing great on UOA's.

Your opinion on this is just as terrible as Ford Boss thinking Mobil 1 is bottom of the barrel.

Incorrect assumption.

If people have an engine that burns oil from new, that's a bad engine. It is not the oil's fault. And your mentioning these engines having run high quality oil from day one supports that.

I recently stocked up with Kirkland oil after their last sale, and I'm perfectly happy using it. My car burns no oil, and I change every 6 months due to short trip oil dilution. Buying expensive oil would be a waste with my use case.
None of these examples had engines burning oil from new. Even if you have bad engine design, a lower quality oil can give you problems faster.

I'm glad your plan is working out for you well. If it works for you, keep going at it. As for me, I don't think I'm going to stoop to Kirkland or Supertech to save $7 twice a year. Even the extra $30 to get HPL or Amsoil is worth it in my mind. It's half a tank of gas.

So using an oil that meets API SP and ILSAC GF-6A is "stooping?"
