I have 19500 miles on the truck now. The blower/meth injection kit go on next week along with headers/high flow exhaust/90MM throttle body/TransGo shift Kit/3000 rpm stall/trannie cooler. Blower is a Magnusson and we will tune to a max of 8lbs of boost. This is a daily driver and not being built to race. Just having fun in my old age :).
To date she has seen nothing but Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 since the 500 mile mark and OCI's have been 5000 mile increments. I will change the oil next week and should be right at 20,000 miles for the blower installation. I will send this sample into BlackStone for a pre blower UOA baseline. I have access to any oil made. What oil would you folks go with? Stick with the Pennzoil Platinum 10w30? I have a boatload of Shaeffers 10-30 Series 7000. Or should I go a higher viscosity? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

I do believe that when you use forced induction it's worth thinking about going up a grade because actual combustion pressures and bearing pressures will increase. Then again I have no idea what kind of design overhead that 5.3l has running 30wt - maybe plenty.

If it were me I'd start with something like Redline 10W-40 and go up or down from there based on UOA.

I have been running Redline 5w30 in my LS3,Google for best prices & shipping.

Hey Gramps that sounds like its going to be a nice setup! Make sure and take some pics for us when its done. As for the oil I myself would go with 10w30 amsoil or Redline. They are both excelent oils and will withstand the harsh environment in which your engine will see on a daily basis with that blower. We have the 6.0 in our new 2500HD and it has tons of power. We almost got a 1/2 ton with the 5.3 but we tow with ours for work 5 days a week and tow the race cars on the weekends so the 6.0 and 2500HD was a better choice for us plus we couldnt pass it up at $17,900!!!!!!!

Pennzoil Platinum 10w30/Mobil 1 10w30 would be great choices retail.

Pickled's choices would great if you plan on ordering oil.

Well looking at the ASTM D4683 High Temp High Shear
Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 is 3.0 (ASTM 4683)
Shaeffers Series 7000 10-30 is 3.16 (ASTM 4683)
Shell Rotella 5-40 HT/HS isn't published but to meet CJ-4 they meet had to the minimum required HT/HS for the CJ-4 rating-
(ASTM D4683) High Temp High Shear
All Grades, min 3.5 cP at 150 C
RedLine 10-30 is 3.8 (ASTM 4741)
Mobil 1 10w30 is 3.14 (ASTM 4683)
Amsoil 10-30 ATM is 3.2 (ASTM 4683)
I couldn't find this wonderful elixir "Mobil 1" so I settled for Mobil 1 :) Lot of guys here sure swear by this Mobil 1 but I could not find it. Sorry. I'm old a stupid I guess.

Minimum for a 30 weight (HT/HS) is 2.8 so all exceed that. Thanks for your input. I'll study up on bearing loads. Mainly rod bearings have me thinking. Thanks again.

We have a 10second 04 GTO ourselves :)

Hi GrampsintheSand the oil I was referring to that I thought would fit your application wasn't the Amsoil ATM 10W30, but the ACD 10W30 Diesel Oil. It's HT/HS is 3.4 cSt and it's loaded with zddp.

Thanks pickled. We have one of our old gear grinders down here that is over 70 and can out drink any kid on the island. Yes we call him pickled :) I will look at the ACD and thanks man.

I tear it up back in the states. I commute :) Back and forth.
But as I went and looked ( the internet is slow as I use a proxy server stateside) The Amsoil diesals do look promising. I wonder how they would be with EGR/Cats etc.

I do like the Amsoil ACD. As far as Amsoil goes it is tops on my list to try some day. As is the SSO since so many people have had favorable observations when using it.

Well as Glenn stated earlier I may have to just go with one and test. Obviously we are expecting some fuel blow by and with the alcohol injection I suspect we may be rude to our oil. So adjusting viscosity, wear metal and TBN=OCI may be a multi UOA chore.

Start thinking about Mobil 1 silver cap 15W50 or Redline 10W40 as a starting point PP will have it butt handed to itself under the conditions you are talking about. In fact the first 50-100 miles are going to be like a new break in period for tyhat engine! I would get some Delvac1300 or Delo400 15W40 and a bottle of STP Racer's Edge and run them not more then 500 miles after the forced induction and meth/injection system is put on and then drop them. Unless you want to have nightmares at night that keep you awake do not even think about doing a used oil analysis on that sample! Then go to Mobil 1 15W50 or Redline 10W40 as a starting point. Take a sample at 3000 miles and then again at 6000. Adjust your oil and viscosity based on these findings! Mobil 1 non-EP 15W50 would be the place to start since it is cheap and available.

JB, why do you say that?

You could run many good oils. It probably really doesn't matter all that much what you use.

You make a good point about the break in John, I was thinking of Castrol 20-50 as a break in for the new cam/valve springs etc.
300 miles is an old family tradition for new/rebuilt/modified engines around here. Then going to a synthetic higher viscosity and working my way down to the lowest viscosity I can get away with without sacrificing motor parts :) I will look at the Mobil 1 15w50. Thanks! Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 did well in the GTO under worse conditions than this truck will have. But the GTO is a NA motor (Stroker). We will see. I guess BlackStone can expect a few used oil analysis from me over the next few months anyway :) Thanks again.

That`s my #1 oil of choice.

Mobil 1 0w40 and GC 0w30 have been used in supercharged and turbocharged engines for years with good results. That is what I would use.

Now be sure to change the ATF, transfer case, and rearend oil more often, as the higher torque can be tough on drivetrain components.

I believe with the advancement of add packs and base oils over just the past couple of years we can "get away" with a 30 weight to achieve the HTHS needed for the added pressure on the bearings ( load under boost). Obviously we would very much like to run the thinnest oil we can and provide wear protection. In years past to get a decent film strength meant going up in viscosity but I do not find that to be true with many 30 weights running 3.X and higher HTHS.
Yes we added a TransGo shift kit/Trannie Cooler and are discussing a stall converter change. We have a MagTec diff cover that allows almost 4 quarts to keep things cool in the rear....
