but back on topic, everything Ive ever tired, all tasted the same to me. they all tasted like Mouthwash. the good old yellow Listerine.
but that's me..

Jack daniels has reserve or smooer whiskey than the regular, and yes it's much much better. I like Buffalo Trace with unfiltered apple Cider or rootbeer.

I'm looking for a whiskey for casual drinking without mixing it with anything. I'd like to stay under $25/bottle.

As a beginner, I've tried "regular" Jack Daniels and the "rye" Jack Daniels (https://www.thewhiskeyshelf.com/jack-daniels-tennessee-rye-review/). I liked the rye version better than the regular Jack Daniels, but they're still awfully "raspy" is you ask me.

I've tried regular Canadian Club and that was certainly better than either of the Jack Daniels, but I'm still looking.

I've read a lot of online reviews, but I thought I'd rather ask you all...I value your opinion more.

:)

Better off to stay off the juice and not start.

Nothing like a bowl of Captain Black and a tumbler of good whiskey to impress the geezers at the club 🥃

Disclaimer, I don't smoke or drink currently...........

This message brought to you by the Surgeon General (from the 1950s). Reminds me of the ads they used the have promoting cigarettes as health benefits.

reminds me of Don Draper's Old Fashioned in Mad Men.

I don't care for JD, either. I find it very rough and I don't care for any Scotch or Irish whiskey. Also, don't like Woodford or Maker's Mark. Buffalo Trace is good if you can find it. For some reason it's the popular bottle these days.

Smoother stuff is Crown Royal. I like Four Roses if you want a smoother bourbon for not a lot of money. Knob Creek stuff is also good and they make a few varieties. I think it's made by Jim Beam and regular old Jim Beam is good stuff, too. A lot smoother than JD.

I've found that if you order whiskey on the rocks out they often think you're an alcoholic and give you a very heavy pour.

Current bottles in my bar at home are Crown Royal, Buffalo Trace, and Dutch Courage rye.

Get the ice ball maker from Amazon if you want to sip in style.

Just for the cool style ? Don't get me wrong, I like sphere's. How does one make clear ice? That'd be nifty.

Directional freezing. Water in a cooler, with the lid off, in the freezer. Only let the top 2/3 freeze. It'll be crystal clear.

the world of whiskey is immense with a tremendous variety of flavors. my quick, $25, pleasant, versatile, easy suggestion is bushmills irish whiskey. you can drink it neat, with a splash of water, in coffee (of course) or hot chocolate, with a simple mixer or in a cocktail. it has enough cachet to be an unembarrasing choice anyplace. there are two entry level bushmill choices, the traditional white and newer red, i prefer the former, as it’s smoother, but either one is no mistake. if a rich, generous uncle is buying, or you are gifting, black bush is higher up the brand’s price and quality ladder. p.s. the white looks lighter in color here only because the bottle is 80% empty.

Bad habit quit while you are ahead.
Why is it that teetotalers always have to interject with this advice? its like vegans always announcing to to the world that they are vegans. OP is an adult, and alcohol is legal and can be enjoyed in moderation and resposibly. That holier than thou bs is annoying and completely uneeded.

You have no idea of the audience to make that statement. If it annoys you you might want to look hard at yourself with your justification for adults with poor decision skills consuming a mind altering drug.

I do not recommend drinking or using any mind altering drug that kills brain cells and livers. Bad habit. Whisky drinkers are almost always alcoholics. It might be legal but it is a drug and and in some cases worse than heroin. If you choose to not take my advice then go right ahead. It does not annoy or bother me in the least as long as I don't have to share the road with you.
