Suggestions for a beginner whiskey drinker?

I prefer refrigerated/freezer whiskey when on the rocks... prolongs the dilution rate which will elongate the sweet spot once you've found it...a wonderful exercise.

I keep my bottle of Fireball in the freezer along with a bottle of Limoncello. They don't freeze. That stuff tastes better very, very cold.
If you like limoncello take a stab at making your own its quite simple, requires few ingredients and is infinitely better than the commercial stuff. I tried it once and have been making it ever since.

Crown Royal is smooth and makes for a good sipping whisky. They now have several flavors, but original is my favorite. My daughter gave me some Hibiki Japanese whisky I really like. I don't mix anything with my whisky, including ice or water.

A friend recently turned me on to various Japanese whiskeys. The have a different flavor profile from the American whiskey I was more familiar with, but then, I suppose Canadian and Irish whiskey is the same way. I very much encourage someone who is adventuring with whiskey to try some Japanese pours. Like you, I really enjoy them.

Jameson (Irish whisky by it's nature is a bit smoother), but find the stout barrel aged Jameson. That is some of the smoothest tastiest stuff out there.

Nastiest are very peaty single malt scotch whiskys (aka Islay whisky). People like what they like, but to me such a drink tastes as if six or eight heavy smokers put their butts (out) in the bottle. Just nasty. Don't start with that.
Islay is my region of choice.

Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, and Bruichladdich distilleries are at the very top of my list.

You mind showing us the data?

So all whiskey drinkers have been evaluated and most are alcoholics? Seems a tad convenient to me.
It's a large percentage but not all. About 20% of people do 90% of the drinking out there. I found it hard to believe, but one guy who used to be a heavy drinker told me he'd drink an entire bottle of rum and coke every night. I think at one point he had cut down to 1/4 or 1/2 a bottle. But at 17 drinks a bottle, that adds up to a lot per week. I think the cut off is more than 15 drinks a week makes you an alcoholic by definition.

Just cleaned the MAF and Throttle Body on the Lexus, dirty, 24 degrees in garage, whew, I'm ready for a drink.

I prefer a good scotch but tastes differ. Here is a picture of my basement bar with my “stock”. Hope this doesn’t make me an alcoholic

Agreed. But some hold their liquor better than others. And it depends on who is responding on this thread and their “standards “ that they want to force on you
Well I suppose you could argue what the right number is, but if you look it up, the consensus seems to be more than 15 drinks a week for a man and more than 8 for a woman. That number has probably gone down over the years as people used to drink a lot more in the past and not be considered one.

Give Eagle Rare or Buffalo Trace a try.
My favorites...although have not been able to find Eagle Rare in over a year, recently have had a hard time finding Buffalo Trace as well...but price has gone up from $29 to $35 a fifth! Heard overseas demand has spiked and they have chose to supply that market ???

If your from my camp thinking whiskey should be from a barrel you really have to keep an eye on the Canadian sector too, can contain up to 90% neutral spirit rest is a KoolAid type artificial flavoring.
