I for one would like to thank you all for the bad PR for the domestics and keeping prices down, so I can buy cars like my low maintenance, high reliability, high utility, fun to drive, sub-$20K, take-any-oil-I-put-in-it-doesn't-matter Saturn VUE.
thanks, I appreciate it. I don't miss my VWs at all, esp after reading threads like this.

you sound like a real hero.

That would be why Saturn is buying V-6 engines directly from Honda and putting them in the Vue? Maybe not the best example of GM excellence....

...why saturn WAS GETTING honda V6's for the VUE... it was a business deal so honda could get diesel technology from isuzu.
short term, from '04 to '07. GM was stuck w/ these things so they put them in saturns, big deal. they don't do it anymore.
I don't much care for finicy honda engines either. that's why I'm running an ECOTEC (that's an AMERICAN engine for those of you not so inclined). great little engine, smooth as can be, timing chain, balance shafts, DOHC, cartridge oil filter, 100K spark plugs, 145hp and 32mpg.
maybe one day the Germans can build an engine as good as an ECOTEC.

mpvue,

Thanks for the sermon, but if I want someone to preach to me I will go to church on Sunday. This is a board for European Motor oils. I asked for some advice on motor oil, not on why German cars are so bad. Nothing personal, BUT I would like to keep this post On Topic. Moderators , if I have spoken out of line please let me know.

Have a great day.

502.00 oils are generally 40 weight, and some 30 weights -- the heavier 30 weight's blended near the high end of the 30 weight viscosity range ~ 12.0 cSt (30 wt range = 9.3 - 12.5 cST).

The Group II based HDEO 10W-30 oils like Rotella or Delo are very good oils and would be a good conventional substitute for 502.00. They are blended up around 12.0 cSt and are HTHS > 3.5 just like the 502.00 oils

Delo 400 LE 10W-30 … 12.0 cSt
Rotella T 10W-30 … … 12.0 cSt

With an 8 quart sump, these HDEO would run 5k miles easy.

mpvue,
If you are going to be a troll, at least be a funny troll. Being a preachy troll with no entertainment value or no useful advice is not fun for anyone. Hijacking threads to hate on Germans rides and to prove what a world beater your Saturn is insecure and just plain tragic. It's a horrible way to go through life. Just be happy with what you got man!

Thanks.

Thanks.

hi VeeDub,
sorry to you then too, I thought I was being funny, guess I wasn't.
I actually like keeping up w/ the audi/vw world, always had a soft spot for them, had a few vdubs, almost had an A4 once or twice.
just thought I'd throw in a word for fun, but I guess it wasn't appreciated. sorry for that.

it's all good, I'm a little slow on the emoticons thing, internet forums are a true hinderance to communication.

mpvue, no big deal. Sorry if I came across like a jerk. I just wanted to keep on topic and wanted some info. P.S. this is my first german car hopefully it wont be my last.

Great topic, I've often wondered what the answer might be.

I also bought a brand new VW in 1998 ('99 Passat). I will never buy another VW... Or, it will take a long time for the sting to wear off.

Ha ha... Seriously I had a 03' ION with the 2.2 Ecotec and I had so many problems with that motor (electrical and engine management related) that I had to dump that car at 46k miles.

I have had german 4, 6, 8, and 12 cylinder motors and most of them have been really potent and pretty reliable. Engine quality/potency varies by car for all manufacturers but I do think the germans put a ton of effort into design and I think sometimes they overdesign, making things overly complicated (see BMW's idrive). At the end of the day I'll take my german 2.0l turbo at 200hp over that 2.2l ecotec at 140hp anyday.

Thought I'd throw this in the mix for fun; I'm currently running Pennzoil 10W30 conventional in my '00 GTI 1.8T. I now have over 4k highway miles on this oil. A weekly peek through the oil fill hole shows no signs of excessive varninsh build-up, and ZERO signs of sludge. I plan to change the Pennzoil out for Syntec 0w30 in a couple thousand more miles.

Bwwhhhaaa...thats gotta be a joke right! The ECOTEC design of motors was developed by OPEL for GM... and Opel is German!!

They use the motors in many GM products...SAAB being one of them...

Ray you might want to have a look at the Lubro Moly range for your VW. I am using their 4100 in my TFSI and it seems to be standing up quite well to the dilution...

I have the 2.0 T in my Audi and have run a variety of synthetics with 5K changes. The only oil that showed the ability to go to 7.5K was Pennzoil Platinum 5W40, it has also shown the overall best wear on this 145K motor. Next best GX 0W30, third Mobil 0W40, all good if you stick with 5K. With the turbo going over 5K is a problem, conventional oils a total no no.
My 25 cents

flyboy, good info. what other oils have you tried that didn't have as good a showing?

Hey Turbo_777 and flyboy4947, I know I'm resurrecting an old thread but can you post your UOA for the oils that you mention on your FSI's so we can compare.

We just purchased a lightly used 2008 VW Rabbit with the 2.5L. I have been wondering what I will do with the oil.

There is still 72k miles left on the power trail warranty, so I need to stay with the manufacturers recommendations, of a 502 oil.

The only 502 that is readily available in my area is the Mobil 1, 0w40 European Car. The specs of this oil look really good and it makes me think it won't have a problem making the 10k OCI's.
