Subjective motor oil poll...

There seem to be quite a few educated oil "gurus" on this board, and I would love to see what you guys consider to be the best motor oils, based on previous use.

This is not intended to be one of those "look at the used oil analysis" posts...

So, if you don't mind, humor me and post in order what you think are the best oils & weights.

I'll start:

1. Redline 20w50
2. Mobil 1 0w40
3. Amsoil 20w50 (tie with RP)
3. RP 20w50 (tie with Amsoil)
4. Mobil 1 15w50 (tie with 10w30)
4. Mobil 1 10w30 (tie with 15w50)
5. Mobil 1 0w20
6. Chevron Delo 400 15w40
7. Kendall GT1 20w50
8. Castrol GTX 20w50
9. NAPA brand 15w40

I would guess Amsoil's the best. Most people don't need it.

I would put Pennzoil Platnium on that list towards the high side.

There is really no "best" oil. There are great oils out there. The best is the one you like to use. Thus we all like to think we use the "best".

1. Mobil 1 15W-50 used 19 years in cars, trucks, vans
2. Amsoil 20W-50 use in motorcycles, ATV, lawn equipment
3. Valvoline MaxLife full synthetic

Haven't used any of the others in over 21 years or haven't used them at all so no recent experience.

Redline, Royal Purple, and Amsoil are all at the top of my list. Followed by Mobil 1, Chevron, and Castrol in no particular order. I think some brands suit some cars better than others based on the make. But can't really go wrong with either.

Don't forget Schaeffer's. That stuff rocks in pretty much anything you put it in.

The 5w30 I've been using for the past few years with good luck in very different vehicles.

For my applications, in 5w30 or 10w30:

Amsoil (0W-30 included)
Pennzoil Platinum
Havoline Synthetic
Havoline w/Deposit Shield
Pennzoil Conventional
Valvoline MaxLife
Valvoline A/C Conventional
Mobil Clean 5000
Quaker State
Exxon SuperFlo

Those are my personal favorites that I tend to use.

Well, considering this list of 9, and considering I have no use for anything 15w40, 15W-50, or 20W-50, that would leave Mobil 1 0W-20, 10w30, and 0W-40. Let's see, for my application I choose 0W-20.

Once you have an oil that works, what's the point in a "technically" "better" oil?

To me, it's more about deciding on service intervals and practices, not just picking out an oil by specs, name or UOA or VOA. That's a big distraction, imo.

I think i will never know what's best for me. I want the cheapest thing that gives me the most protection. it doesn't exist!

When I switch to full synthetic this next year I plan on going with something not on your list.

Schaeffers. There is a distributor, NAPA, about 5 mins from work.

Whats with the 20W 50s and general thicker oils ? Strange to see it on this site. What makes the Redline 20W50 superior ?

Heavily dependent on application and specifics of the situation.

Therefore no reason to rank.

The way I understand it, the thicker oils are used for heavy duty applications, like motorcycles, racing and big trucks, and are therefore given a more robust additive package.
