STRANGE OBERVATION W/WALMART SYN

I was at Wal-Mart last night, and was reading the back of the 5w30 and 10w30 Wal-Mart synthetic oil.
The 5w30 states that it is the newer vehicle formula. The 10w30 states that is for higher mileage vehicles.
I find that strange because Mobil 1 10w30 does not state it is for higher mileage vehicles. Anyone else noticed this?
Does the W-Mart brand of syn in the 10/30 have something for engine seals? Nothing is said on the back of the bottle about it.

10w-30 is more regarded as a viscosity that do it yourself oil changers with older vehicles use.

Exactly... it's been a while since any of the major auto manufacturers recommended 10w30 in a typical 4-6 cylinder car. So when you think about it, those vehicles which saw the 10w30 recommendation are now older models with higher mileage totals on them.

You guys are exactly right I would guess. Mobil 1 products were labeled almost exactly the same way 2-3 years ago. 5w30 was "newer vehicle formula" and the 10w30 was the "older vehicle formula". I emailed Mobil 1 to see if they were putting something in for seal conditioner since I didn't want any for my low mileage '01 Grand Prix and they said it was 100% marketing and didn't really mean a thing.

M1 even explains it as such (or used to) on their website. FWIW, Super Tech Syn 10W30 is (according to the 5 qt jugs) ACEA A3 while the 5W30 isn't.

It would be a good thing if 10w30s were thicker at temp and 5w30s remained thinner. What would be nice is 12cSt 10w30 with the corresponding 5w30 being 10cSt. Is that what we are seeing with Super Tech Synth? A5 5w30/A3 10w30...that would work for me.

Well on the back of the bottle it says that it has stuff in it to help swell seals.

The point is it may not be "all marketing", it is higher mileage formula, that's why it has the seal swellers. At least it doesn't burn in my car like Mobil 1 did.

I just dumped the mobil 1 and put the walmart back in. I like that oil pretty good. I think I will try some others to see what is most resistant to burning.

Can you take a pic of that bottle? I've never seen Supertech synthetic saqy it had seal swellers, even the HM.....

Tell us what kind of car you have, how many miles you have on it...

Yeah, I figure you may be correct. But then again, the only 2 synthetics I have used are M1 and WM. WM doesn't burn nearly as much. Redline or another synthetic might not burn as much as M1.

But after dumping the M1 prematurely, I decided to save a little this time, I bought 2 5 quart jugs of wally syn and a 5 quart wally 20W50. I was just gonna top off my first 2X 1/2 quart top offs with the 20W50, help with the oil burning. I won't mix in too much though, not more then 20%.

I haven't figured out of it's turbo, rings or valve seals, but it's one of the above (I mean it would have to be I think). No money for a rebuild as this IS my replacement engine (bought it used, it's previously rebuilt and was used for racing, was at about 300-350 HP). Right now it's just stock at about 200 HP. AWD Turbo Talon 93.

But a quart a month isn't a huge problem. And that's with using 10W30 Wally Synthetic.

I actually haven't really ran dino in this yet. I could try some chevron 10w30 and see if dino burns less than the group 3.

First I'm gonna try the wally10W30 synthetic top off with 20W50, max of one quart, then back to the other if it gets low again before OCI.

I may be burning even less now as the commute is shorter then it was. I will report back the results.

When the weather gets nice (next year), I will get more serious into checking out the source of the problem. Could be just the way the engine was rebuilt, too (I mean it's a kind of a bad thing, but it has good compression...so).

________ VTec's burn engine quite frequently, just do a search on google for "vtec burning oil", bet you get plenty of matches. I found out when I did a google under "mobil 1 burning oil", etc. Plenty of (late model) acura's and hondas burning oil out there.
